Tail Gate

Hey guys, I just had a quick question this past weekend I took my bed off and apart. I took off my tail gate trim that says Chevrolet, but when I took it off I noticed that under the tail gate trim Chevrolet was there, was that something standard for our trucks back then?

My truck is a 1977 Chevy C10

Same way on mine. The aluminum band was just a step up from the basic tailgate. The basic tailgate had the letters on it and if you had the trim option they'd throw the aluminum band over it.

You are the bomb!! I thank you very much sir! I thought I maybe had a 1 of a kind tail gate, so I was like damn I'm not going to scrap it just yet but I think I might still keep it, because its just something that's cool.

Re: Tail Gate

I seem to remember my tailgate top band was an after-market item we put on to protect the tail gate and give a little chrome to the top of the bed.

Also the matching chrome metal vent shades are still on the truck

Perhaps, but they were certainly available from the factory as well.

And - as mentioned, all tailgates had the lettering stamped in them (Chevrolet or GMC specific).

'73 - '80 were spread across the width of the tailgate; '81 and beyond were scrunched to one side.

Re: Tail Gate

So would it be possible to put a tailgate with the full width script on a mid 80's truck in place of the stock "scrunched up" one? Is it just a bolt off and bolt on job or did they change the hinges or something at some point?

Re: Tail Gate

my tail gate band had 3 or 4 bolts that were holding it in, and on mine 1 of the bolts was through the R. To me I don't see why you couldn't do it might have to do a little work but sure it could be done.

The trunions (I think that's what they are called) that the tailgate attached to are different. They bolt up at the same spot, but they are different sizes.
