Pizza cutters ideas?

I want to keep the pizza cutter look but not the split rim. Buckshot mud sees (not mazzis) or Michelin xzl or similar. Any 8 lug super narrow ideas?

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

That should read "buckshot mudders" not
Maxxis. The current tires are 7.5 inches wide and I like the look. Reminds me of dads farm truck - narrow tall and will dig to china off road. Load range "E"
Toyo also makes a decent 235/75/16 but I'm thinking that's even too wide.
Maybe this should be posted in 4x4?

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

235/85/16 is going to be a pizza cutter. Not sure if you can really find anything narrower in that aspect raio or higher. A255/85/16, if you can find them, will give you a 33" tire that fills the well(see picture). If you stumble across a source for DOT 235/100/16 tires let me know. Might search about site for 235/85/16 tire pictures.
IIRC the green 68 is on 235/85/16, corrections invited.

However if you must have a true classic type 4x4 truck tire...

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

I'd have to know what your suspension situation is for a baseline. 235/85-16s are considered tall skinnies. They are the stock tall skinny size to form a basis of comparison. 255/85 is the first step up from that. 285/75-16s are the notch below 12.50/35-16 (315/75-16),which is a wider yet tall profile compared to 12.50/33-16s (305/75-16). There now is a 10.50/35-16 which is more in line with the tall skinny profile. My truck is getting large tall skinnies...12.50/37-16.5s. Figure that's 4" taller than the 33s and the same width. That's tall skinny...but big! So,a tire can get go big it isn't considered skinny, yet have that same profile. You can only go so tall before you need to add width.

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

SSTim- thank you for the pics and info. The look of the green truck is more in line with what I'm shooting for. I looked at powerking and may go that way. I think it was gateway? That used to make the buckshots before they went out of business and maxxis took the name. Those where on dads truck. I see land rover d series trucks that run Michelin xzl tires but they are on 5ish inch wide rims. Trekkers and expedition guys run them. Anyways...thanks again fir the pics. As time passes I think I'm going frame off with this resto and as I think about it I think I "must" have that look

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

I would not recommend the Power Kings from experience. They are really loud going down the road. They don't stop very well either. Bought Firestone M/T radials and they are much better.

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

Special-K - Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate the knowledge of yourself and SSTim on these topics. After a few minutes thought I kinda started to sync what you are talking about. The tire is wide but taller so instead of a 7" tire x 28" diameter maybe a 10.5" tread width but 35" diameter. That's where those XZLs would come in. Iirc they are a 9+ inch tread width but 40" tall. That would requir a little lift but since the stock springs are 43 years old maybe some Deavers with lift?

I think I need to think about this. I was thinking old school bias ply type diggers but maybe I can approximate that with a little lift and something bigger. Or find a narrower 8 lug rim like the land rovers and toyotas use in the 5&6" range.

Ack! Now I'm just confusing the matter with more options. Shucks!?!

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

Erl- thank you. I'll look into the firestones. I like the look of your truck in the avatar. For some reason I was stuck on the XZL because they are bullet proof. Then I remembered dads buckshots and those took a beating and the hard rubber seemed to last forever and never chunked. If they make a 235/75/16 with that super aggressive zig zag style tread...

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

Did GM make a 6" wide rim x 16"? In 8lug? And is there such a rim that anybody else made that will fit? I'm thinking this is the way to go for me. Also seems like my "E" load requirement is limiting my choices a little.

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

The green 68 above is my old truck, it had 33x9.00 15s on stock 6" wide steel wheels. I've ran 9.00 16 Power King Super Traction tires on several trucks in the past and liked them. They are a directional tire and great in mud and snow but not the best tire on the highway.

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

Good going Blazerman. One of these days (hopefully) I will learn to recognize your house in picture backgrounds. Love this truck of yours... Is there a 4x4 build thread or pictures on the 1-ton?BTW: Did you ever sell those wheels and Power King tires?

Re: Pizza cutters ideas?

Blazerman, SSTim thanks for the add'l pics. With 4.10s and the 4 speed I don't think I'll be tearing up the hi way and the truck (if I ever have time to finish it!) will probably sit in the shop with the gladiator winters. More and more it's between power kings and XZL. Im looking at a couple more k20s and I'm tempted to shelf my plans for the Pontiac chieftain my parents have. So... I'm leaning towards power kings. I can always switch later right?
Thanks again for your help. It's nice to have a sounding board for this stuff.
