Chevy 396 Horsepower Ideas

I have a 69 Chevy 396. Presently it is basically all stock, with a holley carb on it.

What is the most inexpensive way to get some extra horsies under the hood? I was thinking of going with electronic ignition and a carb for starters, any ideas on which ones to go with?

anyone know a good mechanic in utah for some help

some help is appreciated.

thank

First, welcome to the board!

Tell us more about the truck. 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, etc. What rear gear do you have now? Transmission? Assuming you want more power but maybe the same or better fuel economy while you're at it ? Approximate budget you are working with for now ? Is this your daily driver?

my apologies, thought i had responded already.

it's a C/20 Custom Camper automatic, not sure if it's a turbo 350 or 400, 2 wheel drive. I will use it as a driver and tow a small boat once in a while. i want to stay under 800.00

I just picked up a stock hei at a pick and pull yard for 25.00, (off a 1982 blazer) and buying some new wires and plugs. having the original quadra jet rebuilt and going to put that put back on and junk that holley.

I was told wires from a 1978 corvette will work and gap plugs to 45

(the number on the rochester comes back to a 454)

Q-if this is the stock carb for the motor, does this mean i have a 454 and not a 396? or are the carbs the same for 396 and 454?

Re: Chevy 396 Horsepower Ideas

For starters you have a big block so you have some extra power. It just probably needs to be tuned up. If anything I'd check the cranking compression to verify that the motor is in good shape. Maybe change the intake carb and exhaust.

Re: Chevy 396 Horsepower Ideas

One interesting way to get horsepower would be to follow the Corvette specs for the big block for that year. Cam, carb, heads. Then any tune up would just set it to those specs. With Chevy stock parts.
