How much is decent, original bench seat foam worth?

I've noticed brand new foam (just for the bottom) is $400! That doesn't even include the seat back.

Luckily mine is in good shape, so I don't need a replacement, but I found a source with 2-3 decent original seat foams, both bottom and back rest. Where I'm in the dry desert, they tend to stay in better shape than humid climates imho.

So, I'm looking to maybe make some money from these. I don't have any pics and haven't purchased them yet, but I'm wondering what they might sell for?

If this isn't the right spot to ask, let me know.

There is probably a market for minty foam. The big thing is finding foam that isn't crumbling. I'd say dig up a couple of nice examples and figure out what it is going to take to box one up time and cost wise. Then you need to see what extorsionistic fee fed ex ground and ups are going to want to ship it to say CA or FL.

I think the WIW message board is generally the place for this type of thread,if that's what you are after. If you just want feedback on whether we think there's a market for your idea, this is probably good since it's 67-72 GM Truck related. I'm not sure what good used foam is worth because I never see anyone selling it. You have to look at what the whole seat is worth. I just saw an old seat with ripped up cover for sale this morning for over $100 and thought that was nuts. But,if someone would pay that for a seat I don't see foam going for as much,or at least not more. Sure, everyone likes saving money, but most people who are restoring want good fresh stuff and have accepted the fact that you gotta pay to play and want to be sure the cover fits well.
s far as climate goes,I've never noticed humidity play a factor in how long foam lasts. In fact, with all petroleum based soft parts,it seams dry heat effects it more. In humid climates rusting metal is an issue. In arid climates interiors take a beating

I am having real trouble understanding how 40 year old seatfoam is more valuable, or a better quality than what's available today. I have sat in original seats and also in new seats, like those from Teas Design. The difference is night and day. Todays new materials are heads and shoulders better.
Good luck with your plan

I think the main issue with seat foam resale would be shipping, and just about every truck had them, so they should be fairly easy to find.

Re: How much is decent, original bench seat foam worth?

The other thing I forgot to put in my last post is,seat foam can be doctored up if in bad shape. I mean, when the driver side bottom is blown out we just repair it with pieces or,if needed, layer a piece of new foam over it. That can be done for cheap,so I don't see anyone paying a whole lot for used foam if it costs a decent amount of money because they'll weight that against brand spanking never had who knows who's butt () on it new.
This is just my view. I'm curious to see what others think. One thing that kills selling bigger stuff for us is shipping cost, which companies that sell new parts get a super duper advantage on. I shipped a console to CA and it cost more than all the sheetmetal they can fit on a pallet from the distributor

Not worth the time and effort for what little money you MIGHT make.

Re: How much is decent, original bench seat foam worth?

I would buy new foam before buying original foam. Even in great shape....it's 45 years older and will begin to deteriorate quickly in other climates vs. new foam. There's a place near my in-laws called UFO http://www.ufofabrics.com/UFOPages/ufo_foam.html Absolutely the best price on foam.
