Monroe Shocks

I just ordered a set of front and rear shocks for the '67. The box with the front shocks had what I expected in it; a shock and stud. The box for the rear shocks had a shock and a .... I don't know. Can some one tell me what the gray round bushing looking thing in the pic is? It seems to be metal. Been a while since I replaced shocks!

Re: Monroe Shocks

It looks to be a spacer to help adjust the shock angle, if need be?

I think it is time to crawl back under and see if there is room for a spacer.

Re: Monroe Shocks

it's a spacer so the shock will fit different vehicles. if you truck dosn't have them then don't worry about it.

Re: Monroe Shocks

If I remember correctly, that shock part number also fits the front of the 4x4 trucks/blazers. But maybe the later ones with the quad shock front shock option. Anyways, that is a spacers that makes them fit on the front on the 4x4 chassis'.

Throw them away, or save them as they make really good spacers for other random things. I have used them several times for carrier bearing spacers after lowering a truck(non-GM).

What's the process to change the shocks? Do you have to jack the truck up or have any special tools to compress the shocks or anything else like that?

Not sure, have not checked out the manual or asked here yet. Maybe someone else will answer that for us. I would like to know too!

If I don't need then I will put them in the parts cabinet.

Nothing special, take off the front wheels (easiest way) then unbolt the shocks...should be 3/4 nuts and bolts. Then reassemble and go to the back, on the back you can leave the wheels on the ground, no oroblems. I just pulled all 4 shocks 2 days ago and painted em

Re: Monroe Shocks

Its not bad. I had trouble getting the front ones off, the right hand one the top nut simply would not budge. Had to cut it off with a cut-off wheel. Otherwise, its just nuts and bolts. Front you want it on jack stands and the wheels off. rear you can do on the ground if your truck sits stock and you are skinny enough. Mine is lowered a little and I'm far from skinny, so I put it on jack stands.

Mine were super tight, sprayed em with PB blast and let them sit for about 2 hours before I could break em loose....pain in the butt, but I got em

Did you try a long breaker bar? I can't believe how I ever got along without one with the bolts on this truck being cemented on.

My right hand one was super tight. I sprayed it, let it sit overnight, tried the breaker bar, then I added a 5 foot cheater pipe to the breaker bar. I actually put it on my shoulder and picked the truck up off the jack stand. Just a little scary.

Then I spent about 3 hours with a cut off tool.

Re: Monroe Shocks

I just got lucky. Started spraying the front stud and bolt with PB Blaster yesterday, hit them with the impact wrench - 5 minutes later they were both off! Now putting that d@mn top stud back in took about 20 minutes, that lock nut on the back of the stud was tough and no room to get there...

Re: Monroe Shocks

John-
I see in the photo the number for the rear shocks was 34944.
What number front shocks did you use?
I was also wanting to know you thought about the ride after the installation?
I'm getting ready to buy a set of shocks for my original 1969 C10.
Thanks
Ron

I put these same shocks on my 72 C-10. They ride great as long as you're on a smooth road.

I don't do much heavy hauling, so if I had it to do over, I would put on shocks designed for a car instead of a light truck.

The front shocks are MONROE # 34817. Don't know about the ride yet. I replaced the front shocks and springs, backed it out of the shop to turn it around and backed it back in to do the rear shocks and springs. I got everything off last night but I need new spring clamps. A couple of mine have MAJOR rust pitting, almost all the way through on the top ones. If my local O'reillys does not have them I will order them from LMC, about $25 for the set of 4 with the bolts too.
