questions about a 67 c-30
when did the suspention change with the years like 1969 or etc cause i was just wondering i have a 1967 c-30 its been a wrecker all its life the guy i baught it from had it fitted back in 67 at ernest holmes with a bed and holmes 440 . and my rear suspention is trailing arms and coil springs . i just figure that was it in 67 but i see pics of dump trucks that are 67 -68 and they have leaf springs . thats why i ask this question . can anyone just expalin or have diff pics to just give me knowledge thanks

No C/30s ever had coil springs in the rear.

Check you vin if it really is a C 30. C 20 chassis cabs were available with duals, which would explain the coil rear suspension.

There were a fair number of C20 and K20 tow trucks. We might be able to help if you post some information and pictures. Have you decoded the truck as a C30? Often trucks will be rebadged to a higher series like dually pickup conversions or K20s to 30.

IIRC the dual wheel option, R05 on C20s included leaf springs.

thanks my man its in restoration right now making some changes it was origianally fitted back in 67 with a holmes bed and holmes 440 and the bed got a little rusted out and the guy took it off and made a home made black iron bed which was a good bed but he made one big mistake when it made the wheel tubs he only made them 3 inches tall and it dont take weight very well i slinged a 1/2 truck of mine and the wheels was draggin in the wheel tubs thas a bed invention so im restoring the original holmes bed that he didnt want to fix and im going to put it back on there its got the deep wheel tubs as a wrecker should have .

There are a Father/son members here that were at GooF's about 3 years ago.They had a restored wrecker,a stake dually and a dually(phantom) pick-up.

if i can get the pic to load heres a pic of the rear suspension on my 67 1 ton where im cutting the bed off that guy made that only had 3 inch wheel tubs . im restoring the original holmes bed he took off it . and put it back on there

heres one better shows the coil springs and shows dual rear end . i mean this thing is not weak in the back at all it has the original coil springs , and it has coil over shocks and set of overloads and i put on a set of air bags so its beffed on in my oppion was just curious out it being a 67 with trailing arms cause i have several more these style trucks and on my 69 , and my 1972 chevy 1/2 tons they have trailing arms just like this and coil springs .one pic shows the bed he built on it and if u can stare at it u can see he only built 3 inch wheel tubs in there depth dont work on a wrecker

heeres the original holmes bed it was fitted with back in 67 i have all the ernest holmes papers and etc its got rust issues the guy didnt want to fix it so he took it off and built the black bed on it but im a welder and auto body man so this bed is a easy fix for me so im restoring this bed and putting it back as it should be

yeah thanks if i can get it beck together and get that home made bed off that guy made and finish restoring the original holmes bed and get it back on it will look nice i got all the paitn and etc its going to be a dukes of hazzard cooters wrecker replica its going to be blue and white with a red unit just like in the series i even have a set of the hazzard county garage signs for the doors . i never thought bout anyone restoring a wrecker either but i baught 1 then it was 2 and 3 and so on now i have a total of 4 old tow trucks diff kinds , and i see u have a 58,59 gms i have a 55 second series step side . and a 57 original cameo . and i could keek going with all the trucks and old cars i hve i have over 20

Sure people restore wreckers. That's what real truck guys do,they restore trucks. As far as this truck goes,I have no idea what's been done over the years or what combination of trucks it is. But,I can say absolutely without any doubt that no C/30s left the factory with coil spring rears. All Longhorn pickups have leaf springs,even C/20s because they are all built on the C/30 133" WB frame. The rare C/20 w/dual rear wheel option could have coil rear suspension.

i have no idea either all i have to go on is what the vin says on the title and on the glove box door CE347 is the first five numbers so . and u say no c-30s came with a coil spring suspention . and you say there was a rare model c/20 that may came with dual wheel option the trucks 46 years old so i have no arrguments on something on it may been changed but if it has someone whent threw the almost right stuff to get it together right or least believe able . casue my title says 1967 chevy truck vin is CE347 is firt 5 numbers and by the vin coder on here it is a conventional . E is a v8 which it is and 3 repersenting that its a 1 ton , and the weight on my title shows 11,000 but has coil springs . could by anyway it has a 67 ton cab put on it at one time in its life and the frame chassis could be the rare c/20 that had the ton rare in installed in it maybe ????

What does the door post ID plate and rivets look like? Did you check the frame for partial VIN numbers? Does the truck wheelbase measure 127" or 133"?

First of all,there were definitely C/20 dual rear wheel trucks made. But they are far and few between.
A far as yours,who knows. I know how the VIN breaks down and yours says what you say. I think if the tow body is that rusted,the original cab would have rusted really bad. I have a tow truck and the tow body has no rust,yet the can was swapped many many years ago...the opposite of what you have. None of this explains the chassis. C/30s were either 133" or 157" and C/20s were either 115" or 127",except C/20 Longhorn. I am not sure what was what on the C/20 DRW. Perhaps those (all cab & chassis) were built on 1t frames,because your dual rear tow body would be made for that configuration. In the body industry they go by cab to axle (C) dimension. A C/30 takes 60" and a C/20 takes 56". Not sure where the other 2" went,but the bodies are made to work on Ford,Dodge,Chevy,IH,etc,with differences only in mounting points. I'm curious,if yours is a C/20 DRW frame,what the dimension between trailing arms is. I'm wondering if they could be located to the narrower axle at the same point. It all seems so unusual for GM to make anything so unique.

im going to be working on it today some i will do some measuring wheel base and ill try to measure between the trailing arms . may be one those things thats never can be explain wat has happened it the frame is a rare one of a kind thing or someone just took a c/20 chassis that was the rare one and put a 1967 ton cab and title on it . i know when i moved here in his state if the vehicle is over 40 years old the state police and dmv and theft bureu all had to come out and they whent over this truck with fine colmb before i could change the title and liesence it they looked at frame hubs dual wheels looked at all the vins and etc aqnd the weight on the trucks and what it said on my title they even out it on portable scales here in my yard and filled out paper work and declaried it a ton as it looked . so i guess ill never have a liesence / title problem . with if anythign has ever been changed . so thts one good thing

i have 3 other old tow trucks but this os the only one of the 4 that i think aint had anything chaged or etc . cqause i have a 57 chevy tow truck that was fitted in 57 with a holmes unit etc i might have to invesigate it too the 67 is 46 years old and the 57 is 56 years old . never know

The truck I see in the pics has body panels from at least 3 other trucks on it (unless you did that) I would think it's highly probably it's had a cab swap at some point in it's life. That looks like a really nice cab for a truck that was a wrecker service truck it's whole life in WV. There's some pretty thick steel in that bed and it has a lot more rust than the cab does.

yeah i know the cab has been changed on it and it has had doors and fenders put on it from a c-10 the wrecker bed is the original holmes bed it had fitted on it back in 67 . the guy build a black iron bed and he only made the wheel tubs 3 inches tall in the bed .so i just today torched the whole bed off get rid of all that crap he had on it . and he gave me the holmes bed he aid it could be fixed all the bed needs is a couple sections of the side sheeting welded in and im having a fabrication place remake the bed top caps holmes had on it . and it and im flap diskingit doen to metal and primiering it and it will be back to good again .
