starter questions
hey guys,
so i got a little work on my truck done. and went to start it and nothing. so i pulled it off and had my dad take a look at it. hes good with stuff like that his years of being a mechanic and an electric tool repairman makes things a little easier. my brushes and harness are bad. so do you guys think it would be easier to have the original rebuilt or buy a new one if thats possible |

if the starter is good, rebuild it.
you probably can't buy one locally any how. there is no solenoid to replace. brushes and bushings makes a better rebuild than anything you can buy rebuilt. cut the mica if needed. even if it cost a few more dollars than buying one it is worth rebuilding. save buying one for when your broke down on the side of the road and need one now.

Starters I rebuild too. Might even have a good date code for your truck. When I take stuff like that apart I spread out a sheet of butcher paper and as I disassemble line the pieces up, cleaning as i go. Makes sure you don't loose track of something. Like Orge said as long as you are in there replace the bushings and internal wiring, it may be very brittle from heat over the years. Check with your local good parts place, you might get a pleasant surprise and find everything you need at less markup than the restoration places. I checked NAPA and they have Echlin replacement bushings and brushes for AD starters.

I think I may need to replace at least the brushes in my starter too, probably the bushings also.
Now before I screw anything up, is there any way to disassemble/reassemble the starter motor? Or do you just take off the end plate, remove the armature? Thanks |

i guess i'm of the school of tear it a part, through parts in box and put it back together with new parts.
if your going to do engine work later, maybe just a set of brushes and use it.

im going to take mine to have it done proffesionally because if im gonna have mine be a daily drive i want to know that the whole starter was went through and is guaranteed to be just as good as new if not better then some of these remanufactured ones out there today. but if your just looking for parts i know when i called the local o reillys the could get me almost everything the internals needed. i just dont have the time or knowledge to rebuild a starter
