Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I have a question about backspacing!
Just got finished with installing the CPP 2 1/2" drop spindles. Some where I had read that these would work with stock wheels(?) Anyway, Im running currently 15" chevy rallys---and they rub. So far I havent put the brakes back together but it looks like they are going to rub also. So far all I can confirm for sure is the steering knuckle rubs the outer edge of the wheel. Now, on to the question-- Is anyone running droped spindles and 15" wheels-- If so, what backspcing are you running. I may have to come up with some junk wheels as rollers until after the painting is done.

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I have 2-1/2 CPP drop disc spindles, running 15x10 with 4" back spacing. I don't know if it makes any difference, but my front suspension is out of a 73-87 truck.

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I run 15x8 draglites with 4.5 bs with western 2.5 drop spindles and stock calipers. My wheel weights kit do clear the knuckle. You can grind a little off if needed but I did not need to.

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I'm running 15 in Rallies with a McGughy's 2 1/2 drop spindle. No rubbing or problems for mine.I assume the CPP spindles are the same.

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I have 2 1/2" drop spindles on mine for '73- '87 no rubbing . I have had 6"and 7" wide rally wheels on it without a problem.
Can you post a picture where it is rubbing ?

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
It will be later this week before Im home again to post pics.
Basically, the inside edge of the steering knuckle is just rubbing the edge of the wheel. As I said, I dont have the brake calipers mounted yet, so Im not sure about any clearance issues there (stock 71-72 calipers). As it is, I could take 1/8 to 3/16 off the inside of the knuckle and have clearance. Anyway, Ill post a pic later this week when I get home. Thanks for the comments.

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
Yes sir this is a common problem depending on the type of spindles you bought! I guess i got lucky but many have ground off for clearance! I just knew i would have this problem since mine are 4 1/2 bs but i guess the westerns are just a little different by design! I know mine has a good 3/8 knob that can be deleated if needed! Grind it you should be fine!

Re: Drop Spindles and Backspacing
I'm running a 15 inch wheel 3 1/2 inch backspacing with McGughy's drop spindles and the only place they rubbed was the lower a arm. Not the steering knuckle. It's got '72 disk brakes too and they fit inside there like I knew what I was doing.
