Full time 4x4
Just wondering if anyone could help me with some questions I have! There is a 1975 GMC 3/4 ton for sale here localy, and I am quite intrested. It is a full time 4x4. How much would it cost to change this over to part time, and is is worth it? Also, is there any other advantages or disadvantages to leaving it full time other than gas mileage? How about offf roading capabilities with the full time as compared to part time? Any help would be apreciated!

You can buy a conversion that goes inside the transfercase to convert http part time instead if replacing your transfer case and driveshafts

Yea its a mile marker kit that goes in the transfer case and then u would switch the front hubs over to locking hubs, should be around $200 and some time for both. I have an extra mile marker 501 kit for the transfer case if ur interested pm me.

Also extend the bung on the t-case 2 " higher when you do this. Converting to part time stops the oil pump inside the case. Adding another 2" of oil to the case lets the rear slosh lube. This mod is done easily with 4 parts that cost around $5. 1/2 nipple, 1/2 90 degree elbow, 1/2 inch-2" long nipple and a 1/2 inch cap.
Remember these cases take 30 weight oil at the heaviest. I like running 10-40 in my 203.

The part time conversion is very worth doing. It makes a huge difference in the way the truck drives. It will much more "free", less like it is dragging something behind.
Then there is the fuel mileage thing too. As far as off-roading, other than having to lock in the hubs, there would be no difference.

somebody converted my 78-203 before i got it
it got stuck in 4-lock a few times,(lack of use?)when i first got it, but it's fine now to get it in/out when it got stuck/I unlocked the front hubs and still drove it home
