70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

i finally found me a k5 and started the resto. the k5 is a 1970 chevy cst 4x4. when i bought the blazer the front end was smashed and frame was bent. so i bought a 1972 4x4 frame and converted it to 2wd. now that im mocking up the body to frame i noticing some diferences. the major one is the body will not sit because of the rear frame and brace of body, my 70 frame looked cut in the rear and this 72 had horns to mount the bumper, were the 72 body and 70 body different or frame?

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

the answer is, both. the frame changed in 71. so the body had to change also. just the rear sill/cross brace is different. 71-72 body has notches to clear the extended frame rails. you can either cut the frame back and run a bumper and brackets for a 67-70 or make the notches in the sill.

Or we could've traded frames before you turned yours into a 2wd. I have a 70 frame with a 71 body

I will have a 71 frame available as soon as my tub is painted and swapped over. Hey do you have that blue front end for sale on CL

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

Cut the horns off to the same dimension on your original 69-72 frame as fxdxharley indicated. Sport bumpers are the same for 69-72, if that is what you are going to use. Brackets will be necessary if you don't have them on your old frame. I don't see the rear most cross member in the pics of the 72 frame. If it is not there, use the one from your old frame as it ends up real close to where you cut the frame horns and should be there for strength.

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

Fxdxharley is it possible that this change was a mid-year '71 change? I have a '71 and it does not have the extended rails nor the notches in the rear sill.

Thanks.

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

I had the same problem when I put a 71 body on a 72 frame. I just made a template of the notch from the 72, traced it on to the 71 body, and cut it out. It is hardly noticeable.

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

Blazertime, I am pretty sure that all of the 71's had the same frame as the 69 and 70 with only the 72 being different (having the horns). My 71 is like yours no horns or notches while my 72 has them.

Re: 70 k5 body with 72 k5 frame problem

Excellent, thanks Lopemaxx. I just bought this thing a few months ago out of California. Had someone else look at it for me and am just now having time to get into it and see what I got. I am seeing a few odd things and just trying to chase them down.

Thanks again for the info.
