Power Steering question

I have a 49 3100 with a 250 c.i. in line. I just finished installing power steering and got the engine running again. When I started the engine the steering wheel violently went to the right steering lock and made a lot of noise. I think my problem is that I have the pressure and return lines reversed. Its kind of strange that they would make both ports on the steering box the same size, or am I doing something else wrong. Both pump and box are new rebuilts from a '76 C10.
I just thought I would check with you guys before I tackle this in the am.

Your hoses are crossed.. did that once on my '57 nomad and almost broke my arm.. not sure what box you are running but i know on racks it's the small port that's the high press...

If you have a 76 GM pickup box on it you should not be able to cross the lines as the fittings on the box are different sizes. Unless it has the oring style fittings and I am not sure if the nuts on those have different size threads like the boxes that have flaired fittings do.

When I was working on power steering boxes and pumps every day I got in the habit of having the front wheels of the rig off the floor when I first started the rig up and turned the wheel back and forth to work the air out. It just seemed easier on the whole system to do it that way.

Another thing to point out is be sure the bleed the air from the system prior to starting it back up. Air in the system can cause for some strange steering response.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I did have the lines reversed. Oddly, on this box the large fitting is the pressure line. Go figure. Just for info purposes, I used the Earls AN connections and hose. It gives a much more flexible line and looks better too.
