Im looking for any tips on installing the rear paint divider on a truck that was not originally equiped with the molding. id love to use the original type studs if possible. What are they called and where are they available? Thanks in advance.

Re: Rear Paint Divider Install Question

Most of the after market vendors have a kit for the divider trim. It consists of small screws and plastic clips. I installed the screws in the factory stud location, clipped the plastic clips over the screws, and then installed the trim (top on first then push down). Have never seen the studs in the after market.

Re: Rear Paint Divider Install Question

Don't think there is an easy way to do it. The factory repair was screws as are the kits available. We would mostly use pop rivets instead of screws when adding divider trim for a vinyl top.
Why would you want to go th the effort? Once the trim is in place they wont be seen. If you are worried about moisture intrusion then go with the pop rivets and use some sealant during installation.

Re: Rear Paint Divider Install Question

Any body shop should have a stud welding gun and the attachment to weld the OG style studs, I have done this with missing window molding studs ( I have the gun and studs) upon the anal customer request. Way more work than it's worth, use the screw/pop rivet method and be done with it.

My 72 GMC has 1 side rivets and 1 side screws. How do the plastic clips go on? Its been a while since I took it off. Forgot how they go on.

Re: Rear Paint Divider Install Question

They go over the head of the stud, and slide and lock into place. The trim snaps onto them very easily and snug. Here is a pic of 2 OEM clips

Re: Rear Paint Divider Install Question

would you happen to know the size of the screws to use ? I bought the clips but need screws. I figure they have to be somthing available at an auto parts store or hardware store.

Here is a thread where I was installing the clips & trim on my Red/White '71. It already had the studs on it though.
