Ive googled and binged but cant find the kind of info im looking for so maybe someone here knows or can give me a link of some better details. how are they ran through the motor and what will the difficulty be of having a 235 with a turbo? ive also heard that they can help improve mpg is this true? Thanks for the help in advance guys

Re: turbos on inline 6

The 235's dont have as many turbo friendly aftermarket parts available as the later inline 6's like the 250's and 292s. But like Newfisher posted check out inliners, tons of info there.

mknittle is right. Turbos are a blast. I have a stock shortblock 305 Vortec with home ported heads and two 85-86 Mustang T3 turbos and it is crazy fast.

Re: turbos on inline 6

i've never installed a turbo on a carburated engine only on efi engines
plenty of room to install under the hood not like new cars.
fab up a nice exhaust manifold/turbo mount it you do

this is a 09 fusion that we turbo'd. inter cooler is mounted under the front bumper behind the fascia

we had to relocate a few things to squeeze it in. the intercooler piping is 2.5'' ss exhaust tubing painted body color with carbon fiber hydro-graphics applied to it.

and the exhaust manifold/turbo mount i made for it (upside down)

I am hoping to locate a 250 or 292 this summer and make it be a next winter project.

Same here im hoping i can either find a 292 or a 4bt diesel. The junk yard diving will soon begin once school is over and it depends on summer income. but its hard to choose which and ive got big ideas for both. either way i plan to have a decent set of stacks coming out behind the cab and a turbo

Re: turbos on inline 6

One thing that's important to keep in mind: Turbo engines today are very successful due to the electronics used with them. Computerized controls can adjust timing and fuel in small or large amounts to compensate for temperature, load, and even fuel variations. Simple devices like carb pressure hats or timing retard canisters provide only the crudest compensation and they make a lot of assumptions about how the engine's tuned up. Temperature variations from an intercooler can add too much complexity to make cooling worthwhile and without it you're running a hotter mixture just waiting for a chance to ignite. Forced induction plus carb used to mean 7.0 to 8.0 compression with forged slugs, very retarded timing, and excess fuel so rich the tailpipe is black and there was no guarantee the engine would hold up or the vehicle would be driveable. Today's engines can reach 9:1, run timing on the verge of detonation, and maintain AFRs from the mid 12's up under boost all while behaving very mildly. All thanks to the electronics.

At the minimum I'd use a real computer to control timing. Put a stock distributor in and find a way to hide the wiring. Use appropriate sensors and find a chip burner or local tuner willing to set up the timing maps. Ultimately the way to go is EFI but I can understand the desire to keep the engine looking stock and running simply. It is possible to find a computer able to tie boost control in with engine management to reduce the number of add-on boxes but again, at a minimum I'd use computer controlled timing.

I just sold my stand alone 4.3 injection system that I was going to put on my burb. I think I want to stick with the old cast, finned look and a carb ontop of a huffer look on this one. I agree injection is waaaay better for daily driver style that I am doing and will probobly end up installing something different, but for now.....old school rules

Re: turbos on inline 6

Nothing wrong with hiding six injectors in the bottom of a manifold. You could keep the carb as a throttle body and modify a throttle pedal from a drive by wire application to include a cable for the carb linkage and throttle position sensor. You could also try installing TBI injectors in a carb without ruining the exterior appearance. Although rare to find, it's possible to build a TBI forced induction system. A stealth TBI s/c engine would carry a lot of "wow."

Re: turbos on inline 6

it is doable. the carb needs to be modified for blow through, or going efi can be less of a headache.

i may try it with the 235 in my parts truck once the hot rod '59 is done.

here is the system on my race truck, that i fabricated, and tune myself:

Re: turbos on inline 6

the biggest problem is the lack of forged pistons. the cast ones won't hold up to much boost before they explode.

Re: turbos on inline 6

Once upon a time you could find Jahn's pistons. They were the heaviest cast slugs I've ever handled. They weren't as strong as forged but they'd hold up to more abuse than an average stock replacement. After all, when was the last time you've seen a 13:1 cast piston?

Holy @#$%!!!

Might as well have a set of forged units made.
