Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Got a question for you guys. Im headed to pick up the above mentioned truck sat and I was looking at pictures of it and it has a small rear window. Now as far as I know 1967 was the only small window year for chevy but did gmc carry it on at all? I haven't gotten a pic of the vin or glove box sticker yet but all the other pics I have point to it being a 72. Now this is also not to say that someone hasn't switched the vin onto another cab at some point or many other thing that could have happened. But I figured id ask if it may be possible to be a real small window 72 GMC???

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Government regulations were the reason for the change to the large back window.
You are correct in stating that ONLY 1967 cabs had the small windows, but some of them DO have large windows. However, you will not find a genuine 72 with a small back window. My guess is a cab swap. This may or may not be an issue when licensing it. Make sure you cover your butt well on this one! DMV gets really pissy when VINs are swapped! |

I think it was standard to have a small window in 67, the large window was optional.

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
67 was the last year for the small window in the 10-30 series trucks. Large window was optional in 67 and standard in 68. The 40 and up series still used the small window into the 80s i think.

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Every 71-72 cab I have seen has a vent in the driver door jamb, the vin tags are also different than earlier years, plus the rear view mirror stuff. All the ones I've seen are 10 or 20 series cabs. I would say its doubtfull that the cab is a 72.

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
'67 was the last year small back windows were standard on 10-30 series. Since the Advance Designs there has been a cab option for more rear glass. From 68-on that was discontinued
Better check more than just the cab. Is it a true SWB K/10,etc?

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Well picked it up today. This is the closest thing to a vin I seen. Anybody got a pic of a 67 VIN plate? I tried a brass brush to see the numbers better but I need to get some paint thinner. Did get a good title with it that matches what it is.

I'm squinting hard at your picture of the VIN plate and picking up the beginning of your VIN as CM2590C and the rest as PC2074 Let's start with the first 7 characters... 1st Character - Chassis Type C = 2 Wheel Drive - Conventional Cab 2nd Character - Engine Type M = V-6 Gas 3rd Character - GVW Range 2 = 3/4 Ton 4th&5th Characters - Wheelbase Length 59 = 127" Longbed 6th&7th Characters - Model Type (Body & Brake) OC = Fenderside (aka Stepside) And now, for the last 6 characters I can make out... 8th Character - Assembly Plant P = Pontiac (Michigan) 9th Character - Year Built C = 1967 10th-13th Character - Serial Number (Starts at 1001) 2074 = 1074th GMC truck to roll off Pontiac MI's assembly line in 1967 model year I can't read the 14th and final character which is the GVW Class. It will be either A, B, or C. A = Under 6000 B = 6001-10,000 C = 10,001-14,000 ======= Based on the VIN tag, enjoy your 1967 GMC cab'd truck. |

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
That VIN-plate looks like a V6 C2500 (2wd 3/4t). It's a '67 cab and the VIN-plate is the type used 67-69. You better tell them to get you the VIN-plate that goes with the title or you'll be having a tough time registering. If they don't have it you should consider giving it back for a refund. If they don't like that you can offer to involve the law.

Something tells me that Monte (and the seller) are NOT going to be happy with the findings of the TripleNickel-SpecialK Detective Agency.

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
He stated that the VIN on the title matches the VIN pictured, so there won't be a problem registering it...unless they look at the frame VIN number and it does not match the cab plate's VIN. BUT SK is correct with his information. Does the title state it is a 72??!!

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
The VIN tag decode above looks correct to me and the only thing to add would be the weight class letter. It should be "B" as confirmed by the series "2" and the Max GVW rating "7500" embossed in the center. Does the title VIN match this plate as a 67 MY CM-2500?

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Yeah the title states 72 4x4 which im sure probably matches the frame and the cab im sure was replaced at some point so ill just have to put in for a title to match the cab. No biggy since I have to put the truck back together anyway I have time. TN is not strict on cab and frame matching especially on a 40 yr old truck. I knew it was a good possibility they didn't match when I bought it so its on me there. I tried to read under the paint best I could but it wasn't very clear and in it was in a dim shop. I just wish it wasn't painted so nice so I could swap the cab again which would be a lot easier than getting a new title. lol

Re: Small back window option?? 72 GMC SWB 4x4
Yeah,I wasn't paying attention to where you're at. Here in MD they care, but don't look hard. I switch VIN-plates and as long it matches the title it's all good. They check the plate against the title and that's as far as they go. Technically, they want you go get a new special construction plate and title, like a kit car. The MVA doesn't even look at the vehicle. The two numbers are matched by the shop that does the MD safety inspection that is only required once,at the time ownership changes. Then again,if registering as historic there is no inspection required,so...
