Factory 2 tone stepside?
Specifically the '71-'72 super type paint scheme - was this possible to be had on a stepside? Any volunteers for photoshop (thinking black over white)??
I was thinking about a build last night and thought this would look sharp but I've never seen it (sorry for the branch in the picture but it's raining and I wasn't all that excited about taking another one )

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
I didn't think the lower trim came on the steppers

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
trim came on steppers but its very uncommon to see them.. they never made trim for the bed but they would still put trim on the cab and clip. they never divided the side of the truck with 2 tone but you could get the top of the cab a different color....
being that there isn't any trim to separate the paint division down the bed, it wouldn't look so good. to me trim is a thing to set off a little more style or class and It really just states that you have something that is 60's and was special. but for paint options trim is really to finish the dividing. if you don't put trim it just looks so unfinished. |

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
What is "the '71-'72 super type paint scheme"? There was no scheme specific to the Cheyenne Supers. If you mean the 400 series Deluxe Two-Tone, it could be had on any fleetside pickup at any trim level with the required bodyside moldings.
The lower bodyside moldings were not offered on stepside pickups after 70. Uppers were not available. Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super trim stepside trucks deleted exterior bodyside trim from the packages. However 69-70 CST stepsides included cab and front fender moldings. The only 69-72 stepside Two-Tones were the Conventional with a white roof and Custom Two-Tones, dark blue/med blue would be an example. Custom Two-Tone might have been available on stepsides. There were special paint trucks but these are so marked on the SPID. Finally if you decided to do this with the custom or deluxe stye what are you going to do about the seperation as it wraps around the cab corners?

That said, I've been toying with the idea of getting some shortbed rear trims and trimming them them to fit my stepside fenders. The factory side trim on the cab does not wrap around the corner, so in keeping with that it shouldn't on the fenders, either. I would paint the separation all the way across the back of the cab, in this case. I also suspect I would need to play with the location of the upper paint division so as to get a line that fell across the rear fenders in a way that makes sense. I think it would be best to move it up a tad and miss the rear fender entirely, but I need to measure more carefully. I may go out and lay some tape on my truck just to play with this, visually. The truck I was envisioning this for is a '72 short step 4x4. So the lower trims would not be correct.

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
Please don't use the word "ignorance" we are all learning and this is why I try to help pass on the knowledge.
I am familiar with your truck. It looks great the way it is with the black and the woodgrain! The stock woodgrain trim with a set of side boards really works on that truck against the black. Just don't know what to tell you about the moldings. They are probably going to look out of place no matter what you do the lines just don't flow. White paint added tends to look blobby on stepside fenders. Even the tape jobs on the (76-77?) square body Sports only sort of worked and they had a flatter fender. If it were me I'd forgo two-tone on the body and just do a roof if you must. But then I like solid paint trucks and deluxe two-tone is something I have avoided in my truck searches. Have you seen my solid paint thread? It morphed a little and your truck would be a welcome addition there. Besides a bump never hurts. :-) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=552223

I just tossed some tape on my truck - I've shifted the dividing line down about 1 1/2" from the factory location, so that it didn't fall on the top (rather than the side) of the rear fender ... it also happens to line up nicely with the upper edge of the lettering recess on the tailgate. As you can see, it also happens to run exactly at the bottom of the door lock cylinder. This makes the distance from the top of the lower trim to the dividing line 12" even. Also, despite the fact that it looks crooked on the back of the cab, I measured, it's straight! Darn optical illusions... I'm looking at picking up a '72 short step as I mentioned above, it would be the two tone paint if I do (which I think would probably be a metallic burgundy over white)

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
Sorry, It still dosen't work for me.
Might start by pulling a string line across the back of the cab IIRC the stampings on the backwall are lower than the body side peak at the top of the lower molding. No matter what you do that wrap is going to be a problem. You could also try using a straight finish at the cab corner and just two tone the fender leaving the bed panel black. Without an upper trim this might work out nicely.

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
I have really liked and admired your truck since I first on here years ago. I would not do anything to the truck as I think its very unique and special just the way it is. If your truck has original paint You are taking the originality away by painting it.

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
Yes, I still have the cattle guard. Its a heavy duty one--probably made by D&D Ranch store--the company that made the rear bumper. Not sure whether I'm going to put it back on after I de dent the grill crome.

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
Well said Greg... like I was trying to say earlier detailing will do a lot more to add to the truck than adding paint which in the end may detract from it. How about pinstripes? Maybe an upgrade to the sideboards with a hardwood and some carving.

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
I like it the way that is also. And I think there are very few two tone steps out there that look good. That being said, I think this combo might work....
But the way you have it taped off the top of the stripe(To me) would look like it dosen't belong across the side of the bed....

Re: Factory 2 tone stepside?
I like solid paint trucks better,no matter what they are. It's cool to have a two-tone as part of an all the bells & whistles truck, but even then,I dig a solid paint Cheyenne Super because (1) they are the exception and (2) the side trim stands out more, rather than just the border between two colors. Stepsides don't need the trim for accent because the bed itself had mucho body line and dimension. Just look at that sweet Cheyenne. It's cool and rare to have a Cheyenne that never had trim. It's a deluxe truck toned down. To me a Stepside is about carrying on the pickup tradition once Fleetsides came about. Before Fleetsides they were just a pickup. They never had trim. Side trim and two-tone came about to break up the slab-side look of the Fleetside. Your truck is rare and unique. I'm not stuck on 100% original, either, but if that was mine I'd keep it original body-wise. In the end, trucks done that way stand the test of time, always look good, and you'll never look at it later and say,"I wish I hadn't done that". That's what I've learned, but this is your truck to do what you want with. I'm sure you've stared at it and given a lot of thought. Just adding two more cents here.
