more starter problem

Jve been messing with my starter alot because it makes a crazy clunk noise when i turn the key.....its got to be a miss alignment problem, ive replaced the starter twice ,once because i thought it was bad, another because it sheered all the teeth off the gear, ivgot one set of shims that came with the starter and a another i had to buy.....ive tried every level of shimming and still the loud noise.....its like the starter is banging itself against the flywheel....flywheel is in great shape.... anybody got any ideas?

Re: more starter problem

Are you using the right bolts and do you have a starter brace?

Re: more starter problem

What kind of starter are you using, a stock starter or a mini-high torque?

Re: more starter problem

You cut the shims in half if you want it closer. I usually pry out the gear and check for tooth depth and engagement
