Rear end with disk brakes?
I have a 1970 c10 step side I want to swap a modern rear end with disk brakes. Have any of you done this if so what is the best year model rear end to use? Thanks

A lot of guys swap the existing rear drums over to disc using an adaptor bracket and eldorado calipers.
Way simpler, and allows an e-brake. There are members here who sell the brackets, or Tomsclassics on eBay sells a very complete kit with virtually everything needed. Reasonably priced as well. That's my plan. Posted via Mobile Device

I got mine from CCP, works great. Comes with everything, yours being a 70 the the hardlines will match too. I had a 72 1/2 rearend and the hardlines mate above the pumpkin yours will be down the on the tube. Just make sure you get the right pro valve. It will of never stopped better. The trick is getting the ebrake set right so the pucks work right.

I am really looking to put a whole axel rear end and brakes under the truck my goal would be to have a higher gear ratio in the rear end and disk brakes.

Are you going to leave it 6 lugs or are you going to change it to 5 lugs? Also you have to be aware that certain brake kits wont work with 15" wheels so becareful how you order them.

Got it, you're looking for more than just discs.
Keep in mind bolt pattern, distance between wheel mounting surfaces, wheel backspacing and width, axle tube diameter, and e-brake action. All can be worked around; but regearing and adapting discs may still prove easier (but not cheaper). Posted via Mobile Device

I would hope to keep it 6 lugs I just figured someone would know gm made a rear end with all the goodies in a later model that I could bolt up to my 70.

Yeah GM just didnt for our trucks. Camaro's and Corvettes did but they wont work. There is a guy up in Washington making some nice brackets that you can use on your axle. I think that he uses early D-52 with the e-brake calipers 76-78 elderado. Trick is finding the cores, you can buy these at Napa. Anybody know what the link is?

Just have the rear end you have rebuilt with new bearings, a posi-traction unit, and the gears you want. Then buy one of the many rear disc swap kits that are available in the aftermarket.
There are no EZPZ direct bolt in rear ends that will work. If that was the case... all these old trucks would have discs in the rear.  Gary

I'm throwing a 99 14 bolt with disc in my 68. It's not a direct fit and it needs a few days of fab work to do what I'm doing. But if your handy it's do-able. If your looking for easy, rebuild what you have and convert.
