Unhappy alternater

Took my truck for a ride ,and the alternater wires melted down, right where the snap clip connects to it. A friend said it might be a bad Alt. another said bad coil. Any ideas?

alternater

No the truck ran but the wires ran hot and melt down.
I was afraid of an electrical fire or something, on first inspection
the worst of it happened at the Alt plug in.

well ,you can test the alternator in the truck,,if you pull the pos+ cable off your battery while the motor is running and the motor dies your alternator is bad,,,,,ELIMINATE THAT POSSIBILITY FIRST

Take it to Autozone and let them test it for you for free. With a melting wire problem I wouldn't chance anything. Last thing you need is to loose your truck to a fire.

Well guys i think i found the problem, I put a fresh 350 w/new style alt. I guess w/regulator built in it and i found the box wall
mounted reg. on the wall this afternoon. Guess one work against the other? I am learning the hard way now i guess but now that I
put this basket case together literally, I cant help but to love my truck.

If you're standing right there making sure the person is doing it right or know the person knows what they are doing, then you can get an accurate test. Still better than lighting your truck on fire trying to troubleshoot.
