fuel mileage

Just curious to find out what kind of fuel mileage all the guys out there with a 4x4 3/4 ton 4 speed are getting with a 283 or 350 engine.. ...the reason i ask is because mine was totally empty and i put 3 gallons in and drove maybe 2 miles and it ran out.... i dont have any leaks either...this engine is old and tired btw

I don't have the vehicle you asked about, but my guess would be no more than 15 or 16 and likely much less than that. But it's almost impossible you burned 3 gallons in 2 miles - was the tank dry before you added the 3 gal.? Literally dry, I mean.

i had a 1969 4x4 auto 396 3.73 gears and 35'' tires i was getting around 10 mpg, yours probely has 4.10 / 4.11 gears made a big differance

Obviously you have some other kind of problem. If it was using 1 gallon per mile it would be getting so much fuel it would flood out and wouldn't run at all.

I've been tracking my fills for the past year - 72 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban with a LQ9 and 4L60E averaging 14.4 mpg - with a high of 16.1 and a low of 12.4 mpg.
The low was the result of pulling a utility trailer loaded with a JD Gator and driving into a head wind!

I don't have 4 WD but a short while ago decided to go hammer and tong after fuel mileage with a 305 roller motor and some other custom refinements. I will be going from Florida to Maryland leaving May 1 and will report the results here after the trip. This truck got almost 19 MPG 2 years ago with a 350 and Quadrajet on a 7500 mile trip to the west coast and back with lots of 75 MPH driving with AC on.

Well the fuel pump quit thats why it "ran out of fuel". But im honestly not expecting more than 10 MPG

I figured there had to be another explanation for it. That would certainly make it quit... Glad you got it sorted out.

Ha! Not laughing at you, just with you. Had the same thing happen to me! I was picking the kids up from school and daycare when the burb stopped running in the middle of the road. Luckily I was able to pull over to the side. The fuel gauge said 1/8 tank, so I figured my gauge must have quit working, so out we all got (1 1/2 y/0, 2 y/o, and 10 y/o). We walked to the nearest gas station(about 6 blocks away) got a gas can, gas,and went back to put the gallon in it. No start. Called AAA to bring me 5 gallons. He got there and had no gas so he had to go get some and come back. Filled it up, no joy. So loaded all of us up in the (single cab tow truck, even though I told them we needed a crew cab), and the burb and headed home. Next day I pulled the full pump and sure enough the rivet holding onto the pumps lever had broken. So the 20 fuel pump cost me near 150.00 at the end of the day. In the end it was fine though because the boys (littlest ones) thought it was a great adventure and loved riding in the tow truck. I try to make even the discouraging things a great adventure for them. Makes it a lot easier. Oh, and by the way, I've got a '72 2wd 3/4 burb with BB402 and th400. Here in California I get a whopping 6 mpg in town driving, 10 Hwy if I'm lucky downhill with a tailwind! That is why I'm in the middle of an ls swap. Should pay for itself in fuel alone in the next 1 1/2 years!
