Have a few questions- trying to plan ahead.
Hey guys, I have an 85 short bed that I am rebuilding. My goal when it is time is to put an LS engine in it. I have to call about a 6.0l from an 05 GTO today. My question is how are some of you running your fuel system with dual tanks. I bought new tanks thinking I was going to run a 355 which I may have to for awhile. I know this has been discussed but I can not find a good thread on this.
If I get to put in an LS then I like to keep both tanks since they are new and don't want to put in a blazer tank. The tanks I bought don't have the baffles in them like the 87 tanks do. Will that be an issue. How is the fuel pump run or do you run dual pumps and still use the tank transfer switch to power the pumps or what. Not quite sure how this would work. I would like to look into this now so I will know what I am up against if and when it becomes reality for me.

Re: Have a few questions- trying to plan ahead.
www.hotrodlane.cc has two squarebody swaps a 77 with a ls1 swap and a 85 with a ls2 from a gto. They are both running dual tanks. you dont have to buy their parts but they have good info on the swaps.
you will need baffled tanks. There is also alot of info on this site just use the search function. |

Baffled tanks are a must if you ever plan to run it hard below 1/3 tank.

Re: Have a few questions- trying to plan ahead.
You dont actually NEED bafed tanks, just make sure you keep the fuel level above half and the sloshing wont starve the pump.
You'll need to run dual pumps. I'd go with in tank pumps. My in-tank fuel pump for my ls swap cost me $20 bucks and it was the easiest thing to wire up. We'll see how long it lasts. Also, make sure your fuel tank selector valve can handle the high pressure running through it. I've seen the high pressure ones, I just forgot where. On the side of my selector valve, it says it can handle 'up to 60 psi'. I don't think you'd wanna chance it with that stock valve. OR, you could just use one tank and ditch the selector valve. You'd have an extra tank for the future, or sell it. I've been watching your build thread. Cool job. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Have a few questions- trying to plan ahead.
I just called about the GTO. The guy said between $5-6000 for everything. Engine, trans, wiring, relay boxes, computer, trans module, all accesories. gas pedal and sensor. I seen on the link provided above where they said to switch the selector valve to a higher pressure one. Just trying to see what all I would need to do the swap. Now would be the time since the body is off. I have a couple of small blocks to put in it but ultimately the build is to have an LS or Vortec in it. If I put a FI engine in it then I probably won't be getting the whole truck painted. Not sure if I am liking the sound of that or not.
Bohmankid, thanks for the kind words. Not really a whole lot has been done except for the frame. Still a long ways to go. A little here and a little there.

I have 87 tanks with walbros inside and the 87 TBI electric valve on mine. I did isolate the dash switch from the pumps with a relay, it was overloading that section of switch. Nearly 12k miles now. Jay

Re: Have a few questions- trying to plan ahead.
Just my .02 here. Can't help you with the tank situation, but that price seems high, even for a 6.0 from a GTO. For reference I bought an 08 6.2 with 6 speed auto (48k miles) and everything needed from the donor vehicle ( computer, maf, pedal, accessories, harness, radiator, fans, driveshaft, fuel lines, tranny lines, in tank fuel pump, etc) for 5500.00. That's here in California. I didn't get a smoking deal, but what I thought was a fair deal. I couldn't find any smoking deals that some of these other guys find. Like I said, just my .02.
Good luck! Shawn Posted via Mobile Device
