Crossing border question
Have any of you Canadians gone over the border to buy new tires/wheels? I'm finding it difficult to get what I want here and most tire places here just order from the states anyways. I heard that some american tire places will phone the border to let them know of your purchase. Any truth here? Is it cheaper to across? Anyone? I don't want to lose my truck or pay duties and taxes.

Exactly what kind of wheels are you looking for? Have you tried places like Cal Tire or Mopac?

I talked to a mopac guy today. approx. 900 for set of 4 centerline telstars. But then he has to order them. 3-4 weeks wait time. I live 20 min from border. Wonder if I should go get them myself.

why cant ya just cross over buy the rims and tires here,go off road and get em dirty then just drive back across with it looking like they were always on the truck? are they that anal that they write down the wheels and tires ya had before crossing?

Why on earth would american tire places want to ruin their business by phoning the border to report the sale of the tires It doesn't make any sense to me.

I agree with 68 suburban. There would be no financial or personal gain by calling the border.

what sgtjed said is exactly what we used to do. if you want to be sure buy something else and declare that. best place to hide something is right out in the open.

I used to work at a Tires Plus in the Twin Cities. We had a few customers from Thunder Bay come down regularily to buy tires that we installed, and just went home. No one here called anybody about the purchase. I would suggest paying cash for them, as they did, to avoid tracing a charge reciept.

Why one earth would anyone want to risk impoundment and possible criminal charges (thanks to this thread discussion, it appears that this crime is being planned in advance) to avoid import duties? Sure, it's sometimes a lot of money, but that's how it works. As an ebay seller who has dozens of customers in Canada, I can't imagine why a business would want to jeopardize itself by being party to the fraud. Kenneth

All so called emergency repairs to vehicles are exempt from duties.
Everytime I cross the border on my Harley I get asked what repairs I had done to it...its a good Harley,...never needs much except that clutch cable last year.

I don't see why any tire place or otherwise would report a sale to the border. For one it's not their responsibility. It is the responsibility of the customer to report the purchase. What would the buisness gain by doing that? There aren't any reprocussions for not reporting a Canadian sale, just like there aren't any rewards either. The only time that we are responsible to report Canadian sales are when we are shipping them there. I think someone is trying to scare you or something...LOL.. Just my opinion... I think it's really not worth it anymore, just think of the consequences, you have to much to lose, by the time you pay the exchange drive all the why down to probably seattle, you can shop around here and get a good deal, don't risk it!
