Panel vs. burb

I have been toying around with building a 55 first panel instead of a 47-53 burb. Does anyone want to chime in. Burbs seem to be harder to find than panel trucks in my neck of the woods. My kids could see better out of a burb though. Eventually it will probably just be my son and I at car events anyway. Task force burbs and panels seem to be more rare than their ad counterparts... I was hoping to find an affordable 59 burb... Based on the ad burbs I have seen done up I would totally build either. What are your thoughts.

Re: Panel vs. burb

You're right, panels will be more common, more affordable. If it were me? I'd hold out for the Suburban

Re: Panel vs. burb

I like the burb. The I know of two local ones that need extensive rust repair and one has a crunched rear quarter. There is a real nice panel though...and it is local. I am only dreaming because we have other commitments ahead of another project.

Re: Panel vs. burb

Beanyard, I have a panel. I put a back seat in it so my kids could go with me. It works out great, but like you said there are no windows for them to see out of. I know what you mean about finding a suburban, panels are easier and cheaper to find.

Re: Panel vs. burb

Has anyone tried making a burb or a panel a 4 door?
My dad has an HHR, but He's been warming up to the idea of an AD burb. The only turn off for him, is the lack of a door for the back seat.

It has been done. At least a third door

Re: Panel vs. burb

I would hold out for a TF suburban. I have a 55.2 and love this beast. It doesn't look very pretty but it stirs up conversation when I take it out. Parts are easy to find now especially in the last 3 yrs for these burbans. Although I have been looking for a stock frame for 2 yrs and still no luck, almost everything else for it is easily gotten. Make sure if you get one to get the rear side window locks and pull tabs as these are very hard to find but not impossible.

Re: Panel vs. burb

Money is the limiting factor. If I sold the fleetside that problem would be fixed. I am thinking about selling my daily driver and using the fleetside as a daily driver. Then I will have around $ 5000 to put into my truck. Which should do the small cosmetic fixes plus some safety upgrades. That would mean driving it in idaho winters. Which would suck because they coat the roads pretty heavy with rocks sand and salt. I wonder if under coat would protect the rust prone underside? Still dreaming... I guess. The point is then my truck would be where I want it and I could focus on a burb.

Re: Panel vs. burb

I say hold out for the burb.
Ad or tf both float my boat. I had a 59 burb a few years ago. Was a nice project, had a camaro clip. I had a lot of junk at the time and needed to downsize and wound up selling it back to a p.o. After that picked up a 63 ford country squire (never again) sold it, picked up a really low 2wd Travelall, still have it and I got REALLY lucky last year and picked up nice 55 dodge wagon. Still want another burb though. Wagons are cool, but burbs are the top of the food chain imho

Re: Panel vs. burb

i like both, but my preference is a panel
they are easier to customize
and how often do you have more than the driver in it?

ALOT

I would recomend driving both if you can before you purchase. The Panels MUST have a/c in the warmer regions as you can not simply slide a window to catch a breeze.

Re: Panel vs. burb

I like them both but having had a Task Force panel I can well relate to the can't see out thing.

I don't think it would be all that hard to convert a panel to a proper burb. Years ago I drug home a very rusty burb so that I could get the window sections and moldings to use to have the right "look" when I stretched my cab and put in a quarter window like the late extended cab trucks have but I have long passed on that concept and think I have most of the stuff for the windows stashed away. It might be easier to buy a panel and find a crusty burb that you can get the window section out of to do a conversion.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Good debate. Lets keep it going. It has me thinking about hoe cool it would be to have both.

If you're taking kids along for the ride then a burb is the only choice unless you want mayhem in the back due to boredom.
