I fell in love, then she broke my heart :(
So today I became the proud owner of a 69 swb, it was love at first sight. She's a little rough but she has potential. I picked her up about 140 miles from my house and proceeded to drive her home. She ran great 65-75 mph no problem.....at least for the first 135 miles. I got close to home and hit a little traffic at a 4 way stop. Upon leaving the intersection I heard what I could best describe as an exhaust leak.
I babied her to the next available parking lot, she was now very sluggish and popping something fierce. I popped the hood to see what the deal was and the popping or ticking was coming from the intake. It seems to be backfiring in the intake. When I picked her up she had a smidge over a quarter tank in her so I filled her up at the closeset gas station. When this started happening the fuel level was right at a quarter. I put some more gas in her and she was still backfiring in the intake. So I babied her home, I did notice that if I just eased on the gas she would not backfire but I'm talking very slowly. But try to accelerate normal an she sounds like she's making popcorn. And she doesn't do it at idle. I'm thinking maybe some sediment or rust in tank got to the carb (no filter between pump and carb)causing a lean condition, or maybe the timing got messed up somehow. I'll have to do some investigating tomorrow as it got dark on me today. I'll post some pics tomorrow, wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Popping through the intake sounds like a timing/valve train problem to me.....first thing I would do is pull the valve covers off and see if everything is in order.....a rocker arm may have popped off or broke....jmho....good luck with the new truck....

Yea I know it sucks, I'm definitely gonna put an inline filter in tomorrow, replace fuel lines, clean/rebuild carb and take care of some other stuff.
She leaks oil like nobodys business so I'll definitely check the rockers while I'm changing gaskets. Posted via Mobile Device |

Stick with it and you'll get it. I think you did pretty well to make it that far home, right "out of the box", if you will.

I had a similar problem once, it was a broken valve spring. It had broken, and twisted itself back down doubling itself up...if that makes sense. Looked normal at a glance, found it by adjusting the lifters.

Re: I fell in love, then she broke my heart :(
Once I took the gas tank out of my car to get the gas pump out... nother story.. but went down to the local station and put a few gallons in to test it and the filter filled up with rust. Where could it have come from as the tank was just cleaned out. The Station had the rust in it's pump and came from their tank. Now my newly cleaned tank must come out again. Sucked balls but I knew to never go to that station again. It closed shortly after. I would inspect for contaminants in your carb and fuel. Then go after timing and valve train. These old engines had plastics timing gears. Yeah PLastic over aluminum. You can rock the crank back and forth to check play in the chain.

Re: I fell in love, then she broke my heart :(
Well guys, good news looks like it was dirty/contaminated fuel. I rebuilt the carb and it had all kinds of sludge and junk in it. Replaced the fuel line and put an inline filter on it. Bypassed the fuel tank with a gas jug and after she primed up she fired off with no more backfiring
Looks like tomorrow I'll be removing the gas tank and try to clean it out as best I can. I want to thank all you guys for the suggestions, thats what makes this forum great, lots of experienced people to bounce problems off of. Thanks, I love this truck. The pic is like one of those glamour shots in the mall, she looks real good but is pretty rough. But in due time she will be good to go

Re: I fell in love, then she broke my heart :(
Yea she needs a lot of love but I'm gonna cruise her for now, once funds get replenished I'll start a little buildup.
No idea on the wheels, no name brand on them so who knows Posted via Mobile Device
