Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

Is there a difference in quality or is it just personal preference?

I have the Moog part numbers, anyone have the AC Delco numbers?

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

From looking at the parts, i can't see much difference in any of the name brands. I would just avoid the private label no-name stuff.

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

When looking into changing ball joints I actually found it economical to buy new control arms "loaded" with ball joints and bushings (which imo should be replaced when you do ball joints). Got them on Rockauto for about $65 a piece. They were Dorman OEM. Not Moog but not no-name either. All other parts I bought were Moog.

If you have access to a shop press and are cool with pressing in the bushings, I guess you can DIY this, but at that price I found that it was easier to loosen a few bolts and replace the whole arm.

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

Many of the AC Delco replacement parts are actually supplied by outside vendors like Moog and Raybestos. This is particularly true of the brake parts, there are three grades from three different manufacturers.

I usually buy AC Delco when it's available, then either Moog or Raybestos Pro Grade if not. Quality is about on par for all three, so if you find one for less go for it.

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

Many parts are repackaged Moog. Go to a parts store and have them pull out Moog and their house brand and compare.

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

I manage a Meineke Car Care and have worked there for 25 years. 15 years ago I would say moog all the way. Now they are all jumk, I install partsmaster, masterpro and all forms of god knows what that come out of the boxes. I see moog that goes bad in 9 months and white box that last 2 years. I can order two moog parts and they are not even the same when you take them out of the box. Just buy the house brand from what ever parts store you use and make sure they have a lifetime warranty and keep the reciept.

MidLifer,

Do you have the part number for those Dorman control arms with the preloaded ball joints?

I may be dense but I looked on RockAuto and couldn't seem to find them. I'd like to replace the ball joints on my truck and this would be a great way to do it.

Thanks!

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

Here you go:

DORMAN 520113 (520-113) Control Arm $ 62.79 $ 0.00 1 $ 62.79
DORMAN 520180 (520-180) Control Arm $ 59.79 $ 0.00 1 $ 59.79
DORMAN 520114 (520-114) Control Arm $ 61.99 $ 0.00 1 $ 61.99
DORMAN 520179 (520-179) Control Arm $ 53.79 $ 0.00 1 $ 53.79

Note that my truck was converted to 3/4 ton driveline by the PO so I did my search on Rockauto using 1975 C20.

Re: Moog or AC Delco Ball Joints ?

Also, not to divert this thread, but a word on Rockauto that you all may already know - they are merely a website. The parts that you buy from them come from parts wholesalers who use them to market to retail over the Internet. Inventory comes and goes depending on what the wholesalers want to move through this channel, so it's entirely possible that nobody currently wants to sell these parts through Rock.

Funny story - I once ordered a part for another car through Rock, and it was UPS'ed to me from a warehouse 1 mile from my house. Part went to UPS facility, out to a hub, back to the same facility, back on (probably the same) truck, then was delivered to my house.
