identify this car

Any pictures of the grille and the dash? Sometimes, those are the best identifying features of a car.

Not sure yet on the make and model, but it looks like it's somewhere between a 1928 and a 1932.

Looks like it might be a RIO or an Essex. The 4 lug wheels are kinda weird as most had 5 lugs. Is it original or has it had some later model mustang 2 or pinto suspension parts installed? The grill shell looks similer to a Model A, but is too rounded at the top. Its definitely a cool old fayton. What are your plans for it?

it belongs to a friend of mine down in florida. He bet me a case of beer i couldn't identify it. I noticed the lugs as well and figured it was an aftermarket body on a mustang frame. It might be a basket case built from parts.

I don't think its on a mustang 2 frontend as it has leaf springs. It MAY be a Shay, which was a kit car made in the 80's but looks like it has steel fenders. The Shay has a 3 piece hood like in the pic. Just not sure though. More pics would help.

Shay didn't make Phaetons, looks like it could be a Glassic thou. I don't the it's an original car, I think it's a replica.

I guess Shay also, a real phaeton would have 4 doors . Shays had fiberglass bodys and would be a big giveaway. They used Pinto ,Mustang II drivetrains and suspension.

Shays were roadsters, pickups and C-cab trucks (not sure if many if any were produced), but they never made a 4 seat car.

Phaetons had two or four doors, the term phaeton refers to the open air design of the car. Unlike convertibles they had no side windows to protect against the weather. And they didn't have a fixed rood, it could be removed right off the car. It was done to save weight, making the car faster.

I didn't realize they also made the two door phaeton. The body on the original post has a lot of similaritys to a model A but I would like to see some different angles. I have a 36 4 door phaeton in my shop now for repairs, it had side curtains similar to what jeeps used. There are holes in the top of the doors for the frames to drop in and snaps on the belt line to secure them. The top does fold but in the rear it is stapled to a tack strip and is replaceable not removable.

Glassics were first produced in 1966, and came with 4cyl International Scout motors (later 302's were added to the line up), they also had leaf spring solid axle front suspension.
