57 truck steering box lube

ive heard to use

stp oil treatment
cv joint grease
mix of gear oil and wheel bearing grease

any recomendations on whats best to use....ive heard if use use grease its really hard to steer in cold weather

I also heard many different stories for the steering lube. I think originally it was a semi fluid grease it was pumped in then leveled off with 90 weight. I called a steer gear rebuilder awhile back he said 90 weight. And said never use grease as it will not flow into the recirculating balls etc. I think stp and or 140 weight is a better option. Never mix a fiberous wheel bearing grease for it. Maybe something like the red chevron grease and oil mixed would be okay, it has to be fluidish though.

I put a Lucas brand synthetic gear oil in mine. It turns incredibly smooth.

Anyone completely drain their box first? How, suction it out somehow?

Hadn't though of it but I should have checked/changed mine when I first bought my truck and changed "all" fluids!

i emptied mine while it was out. I pulled the plug and tipped it over. I used a spray degreaser to flush the box of all the milky fluid and then put the synthetic gear oil in

I wish there were a good way for me to do that without pulling the box/shaft.

If I suction mine out I'm concerned there may be decades of dirt, oxidation, perhaps metal shavings I would NOT be getting out when I refilled with new lube.
