Mystery rear end

Hey.... I found that clunky sound I posted about last week.... it was a U-Joint.... seems that there is some extra space on the rear yoke, so the joint just bangs back and forth in it.... The question is... what rear end is it? After an hour of wire brushing, I don't see any numbers stamped anywhere.... it is a 12-bolt, open rear end..... that's all I know.... buy why would the yoke be a different size than what seems to be fairly standard? It is about 1/16" or 3/32" bigger than the u-joint. Just enough to let the shaft slap around.... any thoughts?

Talking

Is the dimension that you gave on the diameter or length of the u-joint recess?

If it is the diameter than chances are that you can locate larger cups for your u-joint.

Otherwise, you can change out your yoke.

The dimension is the length of the ujoint... the diameter is fine.... I'm really curious more than anything else as to what this rear end is out of.... I don't have any history on it.....

If it is a coil rear, look to see if the pan hand bar mounting point was welded on by GM or a dude. 99.999% of the dudes would not do a neat job on it, while GM's looked pretty dang neat.
That will tell you if the rear is a truck rear or not.
I think the odds are better that the wrong size U-joint is in there.
