Underbed gas tank

Is there any real advantage to putting the gas tank under the bed? Do you get more room for the seat to go back or gain any more gallons in the tank?

I believe the real advantage to taking your fuel tank out of the cab is the fact you don't have to smell the fumes any longer. Vent lines and possible leaks are avoided by relocating to under the bed

The major reason for taking the tank out of the cab is when people want to increase capacity or simplify fuel injection. Many people prefer an in-tank sump. You can use a later model 40 gallon suburban tank on lifted trucks and give yourself a large capacity to travel further on a tank of gas. Another big reason is to get rid of the sloshing behind the seat and some people just fear having a tank right behind them in case of collision. By taking the tank out and using seats that will tilt forward, you can use the area for storage, speakers, or for a little more leg room and you lose the gas cap on the cab for a smoother look. Last, it is a mod some people do just to say they did it.

Whatever the reason, it is no different than any other mod to make the truck the way you want it for any reason you want it that way. I am changing to fuel injection and using a 30 gallon blazer tank for larger capacity and the ability to run the pump the way i want to.

Two best reasons I can see would be for more seat room/ inside storage and less chance to hurt the paint on the cab. I see so many trucks with bad paint under the cab filler neck.

Safety, more room in the cab, more weight over the rear. I hate the smell of gas in the cab when the tank gets overfilled...plus I did all of that to go with my EFI swap. Check my sig for the build thread.


This cell is part of a high tech Holley Fuel System. Good for at least 900 HP if I decide to go there. Right now, goal is 500-600. PS: truck lays frame, and this tank clears ground by at least 6"

Mine is in the rear cause in an accident I don't want that fuel close to me and the larger tank and 700r4 make for a better cruiser

I wouldn't do it... The PO did it to mine and I HATE it... Just my opinion. Filling up is a pain, for some reason it won't let the gas go down smoothly. It's like there's something block it and it rushes back out the tank but there's nothing that's blocking it, I don't know what's with it.

Well, more room and the cleaner look of shaving the filler are neither nonSense nor gibberish. Both make sense.
Smell? Well if your systems not tight, yeah you'll smell it. So that's legit to a point.
I think there's a long list of things I'm apt to die of before an exploding fuel tank.
However, in a significant side impact I would prefer to be doused with a slurppy.

I want room, a cleaner look and eventually efi.

I wanted to shave the filler neck so it was smooth. Reason being I didn't want fuel to drip down my paint while filling up and it is a cleaner look.

i would think that anybody who cant handle a fuel nozzel and drips fuel on thier cab will just dump fuel on the bed and ruin that paint too

so i dont see any gain there

That's why I own it and you don't. It doesn't have paint in the bed. I guess I will ruin the wood.

I just wanted the cleaner look to go along with my build. If it had been a more correct resto, I would have kept the original location

I changed mine when I went to EFI. I also wanted the weight over the rear end for performance reasons, and I dont mind not being strapped to a fuel tank (especially when I havent quit smoking yet )

The truck handles and hooks up much better with the more evenly distributed weight. The added safety factor and less smell is a bonus.

I will say that I do miss my underbed spare tire, though...

I left the one in the cab and added one under the bed so I can go 400 miles between fill ups. As far as it being ruptured if you get hit that hard you may not be alive anyway

i moved the tank on my early 60s jeep from literally under the seat and did the same to the 68 stepside. routed it in the fender to the side wall, not floor.

i like not having the smell, but wish I had kept the neck in place for originality....
