Finally Joined the Ranks 1965 Stepper

Well today I finally sealed the deal on myself a "new to me" 1965 SWB Stepside.

As you can see from the pic.....the previous owner had a thing for the Andy Griffith Show. The truck is done up like something you may find on the show. Complete with light and sirene.

It has a pretty solid body. It has the original 283 V8 that has been rebuilt within the last 5-10 Years. It has been converted to automatic transmission and powersteering. The steering def needs some work though. It has TONS of play and you have to do some serious sawing on the wheel to keep it straight.

Still has stock drum brakes all the way around.

I wanted something that me and the son could enjoy and this will provide us a good starting point.

Now, check out my Mayberry Truck.

I will def take more pics tomorrow.....I took this pic while I was there looking at it today. By the time I got it....it was dark. Tomorrow I will shoot some pics of it from all sides and stuff. Any requests?

Thanks everyone. Don, you know he's gotta keep that bullet there or he'll shoot the floor.

This one came up for sale and it was right under my nose.

Jake, It ended up being late when I got back with it so he didn't get to really inspect it but today after school I am sure the "dreaming" will start to happen.

Guy said that if I keep it like that for a while that people will want to take pics of it at the gas station and ask questions about it. Said it happens to him all the time.

Do have a question though. The inside of the bed appears to be metal. Was this factory or were they all wooden? Maybe something someone added later?

Re: Finally Joined the Ranks 1965 Stepper

Joey,

There should be only the metal strips in bed holdign down the wood. The prev. owner may have just laid a section of sheet metal over the bed instead of going through the hassle of replacing the wood and strips.

IF you are really lucky, he did so to protect the bed and you have a really nice wood bed hiding under the sheet metal. Look under the bed to see what you have.

I am thinking that would be "REALLY" lucky. I plan to do a full inspection today when I get home. I parked the truck last night at my F-I-L's house. Today I will crawl around more and really look and see what I have to work with.

Re: Finally Joined the Ranks 1965 Stepper

I def. want to put a more stock looking steering column in the truck. The dash has all kinds of "rigged" up things. I want to go back with a more stock look for sure.

Re: Finally Joined the Ranks 1965 Stepper

YOu got a great deal!! The hood damage can be fixed easy. I have a stud welder and slide as well as a mig welder. The rest is simply cosmetic. Son looks happy.
