200R-4 (Revisited)

Can anyone help me out? I think my search function died today. LOL Anyone got a link to a good thread on TH400 to 200R-4 swap? I found a transmission, TV cable and dipstick for the right price. I don't want to miss anything.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Should be relatively the same length so no need to shorten drive shaft. Just get a 27 spline TH350 slip yoke. I bought a new center support bearing also. So no need to move cross member and trans mount should be the same right? (maybe have to file holes out a little?). And I know I need to set up the TV cable.

But my knowledge runs short on whether or not I should/need to lock the torque converter. Is mileage the only issue?

Re: 200R-4 (Revisited)

I just had a 200-4R trans built, picked it up from the shop today and installed it a little while ago. My truck had the original TH350 before and the driveshaft fit perfectly. I "think" the TH400 short shaft is the same length as the TH350 long shaft, so the 200 install may require a longer driveshaft...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As for the lock-up, it is part of the transmission cooling at highway speeds, but the guy that built mine said it won't heat up to the point of damaging the trans if the converter isn't locked up. It's a difference of 200-300 rpm's in 4th gear.
The important thing with the 200 or 700 is the setting of the TV cable. Not only does it have to be tight at full throttle, the geometry also has to be close for it to shift properly

The 200-4R is a great tranny. When I ever swap to an overdrive... this is what I'm going to have built. They can be built to take a crapload of abuse.

I put one in my Suburban. I used the BowTie Overdrives kit for the lockup because I got tired of trying to figure out how to do it on my own. There are a few write ups about it with part numbers and everything on here. If you want to PM me your e-mail address I will send you some information on the swap that I have collected.

One thing I will warn you about is what rear end ratio you have. My Burb had a 327ci/TH400 combo and a 3.07 rear ratio which is to high of rear gears for the 2004r. My trans overheated after driving it in OD for a while and blew trans fluid out of the front seal. If I don't put it in OD it works fine. I am going to install a 3.73 rear end in it.

Re: 200R-4 (Revisited)

This is all excellent info.
I am considering putting one in behind my 469hp BB.
