Exhaust Routing

Hey friends,
Ya'll have probably been considering a new exhaust.
I've got the opportunity to fix my own pipes and also make custom mufflers in stainless steel.
Look at the drawing I have and say if im in the right direction.

I'm thinking 2" pipes, and is there a need for a X or H? a H connection is more simple to do in this case..
The truck has a nearly standard SB 350 with headers.

Please add your pictures!

Re: Exhaust Routing

I like the planning. The exhaust will hang down pretty low to clear the transmission. The only suggestion I would have is to try and position the mufflers as far behind the cab as possible, because the noise and/or drone can get really annoying when the mufflers are positioned right under the cab. Here's how I routed my exhaust to keep the tubing at or above the bottom of the frame...

Re: Exhaust Routing

Vin,

Will you have enough clearance for your front wheels while turning? Maybe its just the angle of the photo. I like it and will consider this for our 61 build.

Yes, sir. If it were not for the spindle over travel stop on the lower control arm, the tire would hit the shock absorber first.

Thanks for sharing Vin! Your build looks awesome! I didn't think about the noise in the truck from the actual mufflers. I'll do another sketch tomorrow for some improvements. It looks really good to route pipes outside the frame but I think my headers is too long to make it possible. And about clearance for tranny ill try to squeeze it tight near the frame. You have any picture straight from the back to see distance with tranny and frame? That's a 700r4 or?

Swed,
I pretty much did what you have drawn out for your truck. I used 2 1/4" all the way back with an "H" pipe just aft of the collectors. The Muff are Magna flow. I have a real nice "Header" sound and fairly quiet at the tail pipe unless I stomp on her. Cab is pretty quiet. ( I also used Dynamat in the cab)
HAve fun!!

Re: Exhaust Routing

I was planning on dumping my exhaust out the side in front of the rear wheels, but the exhaust shop said it is very hard on the rear wheels.

I'm now thinking of going through the trailing arm crossmember and over the axle, out the rear.

You guys have issues with wheel corrosion?

Re: Exhaust Routing

I did. Many years ago I had a V8 54 Chevy sedan and dumped the exhaust right in front of the rear wheels. I thought it looked cool, but they needed constant cleaning and aluminum wheels really took a beating. I grew to hate the arrangement and have never done it again.

Re: Exhaust Routing

Here’s what my routing looks like. 2 ¼” pipes ending in turn downs just ahead of the rear axle. The H pipe dropped the exhaust sound by about 50%. Before the H pipe the mufflers really “barked” under full throttle. Now it sounds more like a 1960’s Corvette exhaust (at least to my untrained ear).

Markeb01, thanks for posting up those pics. I'm going to run my pipes the same, I like how the tailpipes aren't visible. What brand mufflers did you use?

They are Flowtech Terminator Mufflers. I’ve been running them since about 1983. I first bought them from Super Shops because they were about half the price of Flowmasters, but I liked the sound so much I’ve used them ever since. In the beginning they were marketed as Tarantula mufflers, and later they were Bad Boy mufflers. I replaced one pair when I changed out the exhaust system, but I’ve never worn one out. They seem to last indefinitely. One other benefit is they can be installed in either direction, something that couldn’t be done with Flowmasters at the time I bought my first pair.

Without a balance tube, they are somewhat deep and mellow at idle, but really “bark” on full throttle. With a balance tube, the bark is gone and they sound more like an early Corvette to me.

And here’s how they sound under acceleration, about 1:39 into the video, although it's kind of hard to separate the exhaust from the engine inside the truck on a video:

Re: Exhaust Routing

Thanks Swed for starting this thread! I've been trying to figure out what I am going to do with my exhaust too.

Mark, did you have any issues routing the exhaust into the back?

Re: Exhaust Routing

Markeb01, thanks alot for sharing! Looked at the summit link about length and I'm wondering about shortening my mufflers and put them where u have'em.

Maybe add another muffler to reduce more sound. I want to have a "dark sound".

None at all. One thing I did before having the new system installed was remove the torsion bar crossmember. I swapped to a coil spring front suspension years earlier but never bothered removing the crossmember. It was completely unnecessary and an easy bolt on item so I pulled it off, which made routing the pipes a straight shot. Here’s what the pipes looked like from the first installation back when the front suspension was original. They needed to pinch together in the middle to go under the center:

These are the early pipes with the T bar crossmember in place, viewed from the rear:

And after the xmbr was removed but before the new exhaust was installed, viewed from the front:

It’s easy to see how much cleaner the routing was with the new exhaust.

My exhaust at this time.
Will be re-doing it later with H-Pipe and the keeping the home made custom mufflers.
