Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I've searched for this but didn't find much. Does anyone have (OEM) clearance lights on top of their cab? Personally, I kinda dig this look on the 3/4 tons. Does anyone know what the correct clearance light was for a '66? Who was the manufacturer? Please post any pics of trucks with correct clearance lights. Thanks!

I have 4 of them at home in a box. I can get pics once I get home for you.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I pulled some "fire hat" style cab marker lights off a 71 1-ton, because I kinda liked the look of them. Not sure I'll ever use them, they might just stay in the stash.
While the later models had a specially stamped roof skin for these lights, I don't think the 60-66 did (someone correct me if I'm wrong). So I'm not sure if the marker lights would have been a factory option or more of a dealer option. regardless The pics i've seen all have a longer narrower type of marker light. you might find something similar, or workable at a big rig shop.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Reach up between the outer and inner roof pillar panels above the fuel filler neck and feel around for a wiring harness. Some trucks came pre-wired for clearance lights. Do not pull down on the wires though. There's enough wire taped together to go down to the floor along the wire channel beneath the chrome door sill and up to the light switch. THe harness is strung out across the front section of the cab between the inner and outer roof panel. It has bullet connectors already installed so it's a plug and play. There were different light combinations depending on the application. Two outer only, all five or center three only. If you remove the drivers side sun visor you may find the wiring harness there as well. Yankee 66 will be cast in the original clearance lights. Older versions will be cast Yankee 63. I had the measurements for installing the lights somewhere, but alas somewhere is the word of the day.
I found a very nice set of close replicas at Princess Auto in Canada. Still have the boxed set. Never used them. GM used these light's into the 70's. 1965 GMC 1963 Chevrolet

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Interesting. Does anyone have any photos of 60-66 trucks with marker lights on top?

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Thanks, Aerotruck. I know you've posted that information before and I was hoping you might chime in here again. I wonder what dictated how many lights were used, what color and how they were spaced. Anyone know? Seems the most common on bigger trucks around here was always 1-3-1. I've rarely seen 1-1 and sometimes in green. Something tells me these might be a bugger to install if the wiring's not already in place. Has anyone fished wire up there? Hey, Aerotruck, let me know if you're looking to get rid of yours. Thanks!

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I love these clearance lights. I used to drive big rigs and I loved all the "chicken lights" all over the truck. The more the better. I plan on adding them to my panel when done.
As for color, per DOT they must be orange, and only orange (front and sides). Unless they came clear from the factory. Red or orange are allowed on rear. All other colors are technically illegal. Even blue dot tail lights are illegal in some states. I can attest to CA at least for the blue dots. Now most cops will look the other way, but they dont have to. I have the tickets to show for those that wont look the other way. I even got one in my big truck in Texas for having blue lights on the back of my cab. They were the cargo lights used when when connecting a trailer so you could see. I had mine colored blue and forgot to turn them off after hooking up to my trailer. When I passed the state cop on the highway he got me for a $156 fine. So be careful on colors. |

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I think the color rules changed many years ago... perhaps in the 60s. At one time I believe green was a legit color for clearance lights.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
From what I remember the location and number of marker lights has something to do with the width of the vehicule. Clearance lights has to do with the height. I just drove to Queens NY with a drybox trailer on the I-287, then over to Newark Nj. I`m spent. Low bridges everywhere.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Not sure if it is always the same, but the wire to my lights on the 'Burb was run up the Drivers' side "A" pillar(windshield post). Then they appear to be wires in series. Mine still had the pencil marks on the roof to locate where to drill the holes.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Here are pics of the ones I have. Came of an early 60's chevy truck. I do not know if original or aftermarket, but here they are all the same. They do have a rubber seal that they fit into.

My research shows that mine per the #'s were used for all 62-78 chevy/gmc light duty truck series 10-35 (except 62-70 DD) forward control chasis, blazer/jimmy 1/2 ton -1 ton and med duty series 40, 50, 60, 80 (1966 series 80) (1 1/2-1 ton). Includes tilt cab, panel and suburban.
All 1970-72 All 67-69 (exc SBC) LCF/Tandem/Tilt (6cyl-4cy diesel 65-66) All 62-66 (exc DD) This pic is not of mine, but of the exact ones...these are just NOS. Found the pic and info online...if anything different, please let me know and I can correct it.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I got these from a member that took them off of his truck. I've never seen ones that were not chromed. They were a little rough but I'm bringing them back to life and will use them on my truck "Sanity66"

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
I think that being painted they will look good also. I have seen many cab accessories that look good painted. Mirrors arms for instance....i like them painted equally as chromed.

Re: Clearance/marker lights (top of cab)
Quote:
These are correct, according to my info they were standard on trucks with the hazard flasher option. I have reproductions of these on my wrecker. 40 years ago I removed a set from a 66 C60, they were wired through the "A" pillar so I have been wiring them that way since. The five cab lights or any five lights on top of the cab or box truck are legal to show height and width of large trucks or trailers over 80" wide. |
