best dash cap (brand/ vendor)

I'm going to get a dash cap/ overlay for my cracked up dash pad on my 83 GMC. I realize this will not be as good as an entire replacment dash, but for my uses a cap will be "good enough" so I would like input from those who have used an overlay as to which has the best fit.

Also, please note if you ordered it in a particular color or if you painted it with SEM or something similar.

Thanks

Re: best dash cap (brand/ vendor)

I found the best deal at Summit, they sell the OER replacement dash pad for $190 free shipping. I know you're saying a cap but a new pad is so much better and that was a great price from Summit. Mine is a 75 so check if they have your year.

Re: best dash cap (brand/ vendor)

Hey, man, sorry to bogart your post, heh-heh, but Geez, for that much money, I'll try to make one or tear the old one off and do without the pad!
Has anybody out there found a creative way to re-pad the 73-87 dash that is doable? I like the old style dash pads that stick out and provide shade for the dash panel. Haven't driven my '76 in awhile can this type of dash pad be grafted on?

I bought 1 for my dodge from americandashcaps.com it cost $119, you can choose different colors at other costs I think. It is a great product.

I actually re covered mine with some vinyl and being that I've never stitch or done any interior work before I was quite happy with the results. I ground out the cracks and filled them with bondo and sanded them smooth then cut an trimmed everything together and glued with super 77 and baseball stitched I have many more photos if anyone is interested.

Wow, INSIDIOUS, that's a very clever solution you came up with! I was wondering how to make one piece of vinyl conform to the shape. A variation on your idea would be to blind stitch the pieces together.

Re: best dash cap (brand/ vendor)

Looks like the OER is only available in a couple of colors. Anyone know if SEM will adhere to these ok (I need dark brown).

The "bob" guy who used to be on ebay seems to have disappeared. He was the one I was going to use when I eventually got around to doing this. His was an overlay.

Insidious, that looks awesome, but it's more than my truck needs given that I basically use it to haul off trash and the occasional run to the farm. The fact that I am terrible at detail work like that means it would not end well. Tried it once on an old FIAT and it turned out really, really, really bad.

I am interested, I have access to the materials to do same on my 79' K-30.

I guessing you did not make a pattern ?

Thanks
