Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
Out of all those spray on penetrants/lubes, which one stays the longest? I'm talking about products like WD-40 and PB blaster and now Royal purple even has one. Which one sticks around and does its job the longest? Under normal conditions, of course. Not high heat or anything. In my experience, WD-40 wears off the fastest. I have an annoying creaky hinge on my front door to my house. WD-40 will keep it quiet for about a week and a half. Then it starts creaking again.
Same thing for my tailgate. Its opens quite noisily unless I spray some WD-40 on all the hinges and stuff. Then it will be quiet for a few days. Is there a better spray out there that will stick around for months or even years? Get tired of having to respray all my noisy hinges and such. |

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
I have had good luck with PB Blaster's "Garage Door Lube", it used to be harder to find, but I have seen it at Lowe's and home cheapo. I use it on everything that just needs lube, like door hinges, cables, and hood hinges.

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
My brother sprayed WD-40 on a indoor door hinge years ago and it's still squeak free and closes easy; strange.
The only lube I've had that lasts long term is Bel-Ray heavy axle grease. I'm disappointed that Mobil 1 grease separated; guess I don't understand synthetics. My Bel-Ray axle grease is about 15-20 years old and still good as new. I've experienced that some axle grease will dry out over time. WD-40 and lithium are not good for preventing flash rust over time because they dry out. WD-40 lasts awhile on hinges not exposed to the elements. I think higher viscosity tends to last longer when exposed to elements. |

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
I had a door latch that was really sticky and used a lot of things to try to get it to work right and I eventually used Liquid wrench Lubricating Oil, it comes in a blue aerosol can, it fixed my issue and that was over a year ago.

the best penetrating and longest lasting oil that has been proven over and over again is 50/50 transmission fluid and acetone you can find scientific research to support this all over the net

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
Why limit yourself to just WD, PB, etc? ATF mix I do like but will grab a spray can if handy.
For what your looking for it seems you need something with more staying power, not the penetrating abilities. I've tried PAM on tailgates (worked good) haven't tried it on door hinges. First make sure they're clean (No rust or big goobers of dirt etc.) then have at it. On tailgates, dry moly worked best for me. Kinda like a spray graphite, but goes on dry. don't rule out standard motor oil or even 90wt (or even grease) I have used couple drops of 90 wt on squeaky truck door hinges, house doors would get 30 wt. Pop the pin up 1/2 to 3/4" then let oil work it's way down, tap pin back in, use.

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
Surprised nobody's mention 3in1. That's stuff is real thin but its also a great oil for machins and tools and such. Also royal purple has this new max film stuff. At ten dollers a can its spendy as hell but I have never used it. I belive it has thier synerlec technology which when they had it in their oil was pretty awesome. The oil woul stay in a thin film on everything helping dry starts some.
Another good place to look is bobistheoilguy forums. Alot of those guys really know what they are doing over there. Great place to read up on oils and such if you have time Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
lube with staying power...i've allways liked too use the chain lube for dirt biks/atvs. the one draw back it has is it will collect the dirt n dust but it stays put.

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
I haven't used this one yet, but how about dry graphite lube? It sprays on wet but then dries out leaving the graphite there as the lubricant. The graphite isn't going to dry up and leave either, so I would suspect it could last a while.
I just honestly don't know how well the graphite works for stopping squeaks and such. |

dry or wet graphite
WW@ they went from 2 mission to 200 mission per bomber run on the engines when they added dry graphite to the oil. |

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
David's spot on.
Many penetrating oils, like WD-40, attract moisture so its better to use them just for thoroughly flushing the hinge followed by an actual lubricant. Good choices for lubing are lithium and most graphite, silicone or wax based compounds. Oddly enough, I've had long lasting results with spray detailer, paste wax, gear oil, bearing grease... above all, I prefer GDL or, as mentioned, dry graphite (Do your door handle too). I hate squeaks so have become somewhat of a lubricating fool plus I own a zillion padlocks. . Last edited by ETsC10; 05-08-2013 at 04:56 PM. |

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
I have great success with gibbs, and for anyone with guns gibbs is top notch. Protects, lubes, good for storage. If i remember correctly, la pd has their own armorer in house and they started using gibbs and no more misfires. A little off topic but metal protection none the less. Oh, i get it off the internet in a case at a time to get the cost down, and i end up splitting a case up amongst friends. Not a single friend has said he found anything better.

Re: Spray penetrant/lube with the most staying power?
Fluid film is one of better all around lube and rust preventer's I've used. I use on my trucks and around the shop, and have buddy's that work for the highways and use it by the 55 gal drum on the salt trucks to stop the rust and keep things going.
