Is this a 292?

Bought a K20, has a 292 on the SPID and the PO says this is it. This is a pic of the engine in the shed, Can you confirm that its a 292 or at least looks right for a early 70's I6 chevy? Pic was taken at night. Also, is the bellhousing the same for this as a SBC?

Looks like a picture out of a horror movie, poor motor. It does look like a 292 to me. Being that I have one.

If the motor mounts are offset from each other, it's a 292. If they are straight across from each other, it's a 250/230. And the lifter covers are 6" tall on the 292 and 4" tall on the 250/230s And yes, the bell housing is the same.

Yes it's a 292.

You can tell by the large bypass hose on the front of the engine which is 292 specific. 230/250 engines do not have that bypass.

Next question, he said its tired so I'm wondering how easy/expensive these are to rebuild? They typically need many parts to rebuild or just bearings, rings, and valve/head work? Know of any good rebuilders for these? Anything tricky that a typical SBC rebuilder would have trouble with? I would like to do myself but just don't have time.

Good call. I missed that. That also tells us that it is one of the older ones. I don't know when they switched, but at some point they started using a smaller, 3/4" bypass hose. Does it have any stamped numbers on the pad by the distributor? On trucks, they started doing that in '69. 68 and older won't have stamped numbers. One other change they made starting in '69--they switched the cranks from 6 counterweights to 12. It's said that the 12 CW crank may be a bit smoother, but the 6 CW is maybe a little tougher. But as tough and smooth as these sixes are, I don't know how a guy could tell

Good luck with it and let us know what you find. If it comes to getting it bored, make sure your machinist has a torque plate to bolt to the top of the block.
