Craigslist Scam or Ignorance??

Every once in a while I check out what is on craigslist and today I found this one http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/3760401504.html. Check out the title of the listing and then the wheel base on the SPID... I was tempted to email the guy and let him know of the discrepancy, but I figure he won't care. He's just trying to make the big $$.

I couldn't restrain myself, I had to send them a note. This is what I sent:

Hey, just a note on this truck. The SPID appears to show this truck having a 127" wheel base, which is a long bed. Therefore, this truck should not be listed as a "factory" short bed. It looks to be a great truck, and possibly worth your asking price, but in the interest of exercising due care you may want to advertise it accurately.

It is a good lucking truck but not advertised right, but most people wouldnt even respond though

I can't remember the times I've looked at these trucks on craigslist and seen them advertised as one thing and I know they're something different. Several years ago a guy even argued with me that the truck he was selling was a 69 Chevy when the picture showed it with 4 headlights. The price was right and I was interested so I asked him to verify it was a Chevy since the front end was for a GMC. He got indignant said I was stupid and didn't know more than the previous owner. I wrote back and told him he was an ignorant dufus and decided to pass on it.

I read the description in the link. It does state that it was a long bed converted to a short bed.

It still should not be advertised as "factory"


It is a beautiful truck and someone will purchase it regardless of the information on the spid. Good eye and to the purist, this is a no no.

I've done that on a couple of occasions, Sometimes I got back a reply appreciated the fact that I brought the mistake to the attention. And others no reply. But usually not on a big ticket item.

I am curious if this guy replies back to your email.

Another thing to consider is that the truck is being sold on consignment and the selling dealer (redline auto sports) may have no idea what they are selling. There job is to sell for a customer and charge a percentage.

I hear what you are saying, but as a business they are legally bound to exercise "due care" which means they could be held at least partially responsible for misleading a consumer.

That one is a short bed, compared to my factory 10.5ft behind cab on my 72 ton truck. LOL

Ah! You are correct TBONE, their web site does state it is a conversion. But the CL ad doesn't. They also call is "... a rare and Very Nice 1972 Cheyenne Super Sport Short Wide bed Pick Up Truck" which is not entirely true. It is certainly a way to hook a buyer. Hopefully they will disclose the info on the short bed swap to a buyer.

That is a nice truck, if I were interested I would simply want to have the opportunity to inspect the work if it was shortened. It just seems to me the CL add is a bit misleading.
