repainting a console
I am going to redo my console in my 1970 blazer. It isn't cracked, so it just needs a coat of black paint. Has anyone done this and does it take a certain kind of paint. Any advice welcome.
Thanks- Ken |

Just shot the lid on my console with a test coat of SEM black vinyl dye. It looks really good but I bought the wrong black (Landau). Aside from the non glossy finish it looks great. As far as durability I don't know.

Has anyone tried the new spray paint that they have been advertising that is suppose to bond with plastic?

Hey guys how is the paint holding up on the consoles, I am getting ready to paint mine. Exactly what color and brand of paint looks closest to the original?

SEM vinyl dye works great. Just make sure you follow the directions for prepping the plastic before you spray. I once dyed a vinyl covered steering wheel and it lasted for years. If you have one available to you, go to a professional auto paint supplier. They will tell you exactly how to do it and supply you with the correct materials. Spray it on in very light multiple coats rather than trying to get it all on at once. It always seems to turn out better that way.

The aircraft stripper I used I left on for 1/2 hr with no ill effect to the console. It worked pretty fast.
It's been maybe 6 months now and the SEM brand dye I used has held up fine.No peeling or chipping and the semi gloss finish is still semi-glossy:p

The minor cracks in the cup holder were fixed with J.B. weld.
The MAJOR hole and crack you see were too big for J.B. weld so I got some galvinized sheet metal, cut it and bent it so it followed the contour of the bottom and inside of the console. I then rivited it in place sandwiching the orig. console bottom between the two sheets of metal. I then sprayed it with the SEM dye/paint. Here I've bent up the sheet meatal to conform to the bottom of the console. ![]() Bottom done. ![]() Here's the metal plate I cut up for the inside. ![]() I've painted it here with the SEM dye/paint.You can JUST see the rivits I used to attach the two metal sheets together. ![]()

I used duplicolor brand interior spray paint on my newer style console. My ol rotty likes to stand on it and his claws have done no damage. That's been several years ago. My only concern is that the plastic on these old consoles some times become brittle and scratch easily. When I did a set of door panels I had to sand them smooth first to get a good stick

Gee_Emm,ya,SEM Landau Black.
The first can of SEM Landau Black I got came out a REAL dull, almost flat color. I took it back to the autobody supply store I got it from and he said it should have a semi-gloss finish to it. He gave me a replacement can and you can see the results that can gave me.
