Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Found this truck in the Oregon section. I'm really thinking about buying it. I wouldn't mind making a 300+ mile trip.
What do you guys think? http://bend.craigslist.org/cto/3706021977.html |

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
I would go look at it before u get too excited. It could be pretty butchered. A "drag truck" built on a junk yard budget can produce a nightmare.

He sent me a bunch of pics and it looks pretty solid and looks just like what he described.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Be careful and don't let eagerness influence your decision. There have been a lot of modifications to that truck and might produce some headaches trying to make it good and reliable.
But, if the package the seller is offering is what you would like to have, then go for it. Good luck.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
This truck could be good but it could be a nightmare too. It's been kind of Frankensteined together. I would be really carefull with that caddy engine. IMO there is a reason why caddy engines are rarely used in the racing world

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Do you want a pseudo drag truck with a caddy engine and all the associated headaches that absolutely come with it? If yes, then it's probably a good buy (but also a must see beforehand). If you think you might prefer a more stock one, then don't even consider it. You have to really want a cad motor truck to enjoy this once you get it. Personally, a cad motor swap is more of a rat rod swap (sorry) and I am just not able to see 67-72 chevs lwb trucks as rat rods. This is just my opinion, but all the cautions you're hearing above and herein might make you want to be certain before you buy. There's no way to know all the pop-up headaches you're gonna experience the first time you need to make a trip to the parts store. When you tell the freckle-faced teenager behind the counter that you have a chev with a caddy motor, his computer will start to smoke...

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
That is a lot of money to pay for what is essentially a pile of parts.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
I think I have seen this one Craigslist before, might have even been lat summer. Not saying it's not as described, but I do notice he says if parted, he wants 1500 firm for the motor which leaves only 500 for the truck.. That might not mean anything, but it may also be that the truck has been hammered more than pictures show.. For about 2K, there seems to be plenty of running driving long bed trucks in the Northwest to choose from.. and since it states stock suspension, your not gaining any (drag truck) influence there either. If you want to build a Caddy powered truck, you might be farther ahead sourcing a motor/tranny and starting with a better truck specimen. It of course all depends on what your looking for, and budget.. But at least you would know exactly what you have first hand.
Best of luck no matter what you decide.. I'm not bashing the seller in anyway, just posting my thoughts,,

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
He said it runs and that I can test drive it (if I drive 300+ miles to do so). He did mention that he replace the master cylinder thing that holds the brake fluid, put new lines in all the way to both front brakes and put new springs and all in the front as well. Only thing he did for the rear was bleed them out. I have a bunch more pics that I will try to get them to load onto here later. I just want to buy it for the engine. I already have a 70 chevy that Had a 472 caddy that blew up on my, but like mentioned above, he did say on the phone that he will part the motor for $1500. Might as well just spend the extra 500 and get the truck too. Never know what I could build another truck into.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
i really doubt the engine is putting out those numbers.... it would need cam, ported polished heads and higher comp.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Well just talked my girl into letting me drive out there tomorrow and check it to see if what all this guy says and shows in the pics is real. In fact my girl wants to come with me and told me that we should bring the trailer just in case. I think she might buy it cause I personally haven't made a decision. Bout a 6 1/2 hour drive though

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Not necessarily to make those kind of numbers. Maybe for a chevy motor, but these caddy motors are torque monsters. My 472 caddy (before it blew up) had a big cam, ported aluminum heads, and a high rise intake with a 850cfm holley and was making 688 hp on dyno and 804 torque. But for a stock 500 like what he has in the ad, even if the numbers aren't true, I bet they are very close to the actual numbers. These engines are very impressive. You can actually run them up to 900 torque before you have to switch anything to aluminum, but of course I'm sure you would have to put nos on it. I've been talking to a company that races and builds performance parts for caddy's for about the last 4 years.

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
sounds like you have plenty of caddy motor experience - so, I'm LESS worried than I was before - you will know what you are getting into when you look at it and can make an informed decision then. Good Luck! Road trips are FUN!!

Some may frown upon what I want to do, but I like to be different and since there aren't a whole lot if any at all caddy motors out there racing, I want to be that odd ball out there. lol If all goes over well with this truck, I'm going to build the truck to raise awareness for a condition I have and hopefully make money off it to donate to my condition as well as other conditions out that like: MS, breast cancer, autistic kids and so fourth. |

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
If the truck is really like what he states it to be, then I wouldn't mind spending 2k for it, but either way I'd still like to talk him down a bit.
So What would be a reasonable price that you guys would spend for it? I'm hoping I can get him down to $1,700 and still get all the extra parts. |

Re: Craigslist Find. Thinking about buying it
Well looks like I'm not getting the truck OR the engine. He called me right when I was leaving (at the gas station) to tell me that things came up and since know one has officially bought it yet, that he is going to keep the engine and is selling just the truck for $800, but is willing to come down to $600.
http://bend.craigslist.org/cto/3791748521.html That is his new ad that he posted, so if anyone is interested, It's one hell of a buy. Give him $700 and get a brand new cherry picker for free at his cost which means the buyer spends $500+ for it since they get a brand new cherry picker. Some one better hope on this. I may still get the truck just for the body, but who ever else wants, go get it. lol |
