Custom Camper question

i now understand that some '71-'72 chevys as well as GMC's had "Custom Camper" door emblems.
if a chevy has the door emblems, what is the correct emblem for the fenders? "Custom/30" or "CustomCamper/30"?

Only '72 Chevys had the Custom Camper door scripts. The fenders will have whatever trim level the truck is...Custom,Custom Deluxe,Cheyenne,or Cheyenne Super. The Custom Camper/20 & 30 door badges were 69-71. In '69 Chevy offered a Custom Camper/10 as well.

And... the 1967-68 models had a 1966-style logo on the front fenders, only with "Custom Camper" where the tonnage designator would be.

i guess i will keep my door scripts to use on the '72. i cobbled them together from 3 emblem lots. i was going to sell them to a GMC owner but i think i'll use them.

Just to be clear on Chevrolets.
67-68 "Custom Camper" fender emblem
69-71 "CustomCamper/XX" 10-30 fender emblem

Tim - the pic of the 72 emblem above doesn't appear to show the correct location as seen here. I'm researching placement now getting ready to add these emblems on my K20. The factory manual doesn't give great info for hole location relative to the edge of the door. Pete

LOL! Maybe that's because the GM schematic isn't exactly clear on distance from door edge. I haven't seen one installed as close to the door edge above in combing through pics though.

Actually it is very clear where the emblems are to be located. The problem is that you are not using the same reference system.

The emblems are not located off an "edge" but are referenced from specific locations. This is done using a common Cartesian coordinate system. To keep things simple on these drawings it is a location aft and up from fixed "0" locations. Unfortunately these reference points are not common knowledge. But you can, through diligence, locate production hole/s to use as local reference.

In this case it is very clear where the driver's side emblem ends and the passenger side starts.

They are both 0.38" AFT of station 50.

As your good luck would have it the upper (belt) door molding has a hole at station 50.

So all you really need to do is make a layout template for the pin holes using the factory spacing and vertical differences from a fixed waterline reference, 35 in this case.

Then position it using the hole at 50 as you fore and aft locator.

Can't help you with the waterline 35 as to exact location but if I were to guess I would say it is very close to 6.06" up from that very same molding hole at 50. The molding is down 1.06" from 30. Convention says this is likely an inch based system so 35 is probably 5" above 30 as projected.

Since the emblems are down 1.27- 1.41" from the 35 waterline it locates comfortably in the radius above the door panel where we expect to see it as in the pictures.

Yup. Maybe some seen were added in an improper location. OR...perhaps those are from Janesville. You know how they are with their emblem locations

Both are very possible. Dealer added emblems would have been surely possible and owner additions as well. But I suspect many more were peeled off than added.
A plant variation is a very real and likely possibility. Several of my pictures were of known Freemont "Z" assembled trucks. If you find a forward emblem location, try and determine the assembly plant for us.

Dealer installed makes sense to me. I know I have pulled these emblems off of trucks other than 72, and they weren't GMC's. The different locations would support this as well. I have also encountered them with barrel nuts used for attachment, as well as 5/16 thread cutting nuts.

good info here! my key check for making sure of proper location on the 72 emblem is that the one closest to the edge is always visible in plain view when you open the door, the post nut sticks thru the door skin and is easily attached in the door jamb area. Not so with the other 3 attach points, have to access from inside the door itself.

I've got 4-5 sets of emblems and will see what the mix is between barrel nuts and speed nuts. If the camper nameplate is listed on the SPID I would assume the emblem was factory installed....
