2 fuel tanks, 1 problem
I have a 1990 R3500 with dual tanks. I alternate fuel tanks to keep the fuel fresh. I just switched to my right tank and used it for about 50 miles when it started dying on me, especially at idle. When I switch back to the left tank it runs fine. Do these trucks share a fuel pump and filter or do they each have their own? I thought bad gas but it ran fine for the first 1/4 tank. I'm just looking for some suggestions on possible causes.

that truck should have a TBI injection system on it and so it would have a fuel pump in each tank. I would guess that you have a bad pump or maybe something simple like a split fuel line in the tank. I'm not sure if they share a fuel filter or have separate ones.

Could be the pump or something as simple as a split fuel line in the tank like mtnsackett said. I would suggest replacing the pump anyway since you have to drop the tank or raise the bed anyway. The pumps are relatively cheap(around 65.00) and still available through the dealer or somewhere online like Rockauto.

My 87 shares the same filter they all come together at that junction block then run to the filter-tb-return back to the tank i believe is how it goes, i could be wrong though lol

Also, make sure you buy an AC Delco replacement pump, don't buy a cheap Airtex like I did.

Great info! Thank you. I will start with the pump and I will use a Delco. I'll let you know if this problem stops after the swap.

I finally got the Delco in the tank. Thanks for the info. It's hard to get motivated to do it when you can just keeping using one tank. Anyway, problem solved. I have other issues that I am going to start a new post on.
