Rear ends???
First of what I'm sure will be many questions. Recently purchased my first old truck, 1959. Going to take out the 235 and replace with a rebuilt 327 and turbo 350. Question I have is will the original rear end hold up? Eventually will change over to disc brakes up front, waiting on deciding on rear end first, so the 5 or 6 lug conversion. I have spent days looking at old posts. Just needs some guidance. If I should replace it what should I looking for, I have read a lot about camaros/trans am/4x4 blazer. I know 62 in width. My goal is a good all around driver, a little ump and handle the 65 on the highway. Thanks in advance, you guys are impressive.

Sure the rear end will hold up. But you might want to look for a better rear end for a better gear ratio. On one hand, the lower the gear, the better gas mileage you'll get, but on the other hand, the higher the ratio, the more torque you'll have. If you don't intend to haul anything serious like a camping trailer, I'd look for something like a 3.23:1 ratio.

I'll assume the original rear gears are 3.90:1. These will accelerate like a rocket with the V-8, if you keep them, install an overdrive trans to tame them at freeway speeds.

I think the 60s trucks had a 10 bolt with 8.2 inch ring gear that was the right width. Disc brake kits are available, as are lots of rebuild parts. 3.5x gear ratios, too.

My Uncle in the sixty's ran a 392 Hemi with a 727 torqueflight tranny in a 1957 truck with stock rear end and it worked good he ran it on drags on weekend and used it for work during the week.

Could he keep the rear axle, but use an AOD transmission instead of the th350? What do I know

if you want to go 65 mph i'd change it, stock cruising speed is 45-50 mph
options are as varied as builds in this forum truk has an 86 trans am (3rd gen camaro) axle in it w/ disc and 3.27 posi i get 20 mpg cruising at 80 mph, but it will go a lot faster if needed
