stock transmission cooler

so I flushed my tranny lines yesterday and couldnt quite understand whats going on with the cooler.
The lines go into the main radiator back out and into the trans cooler and then back to the trans.

why does it go into the main radiator?

Re: stock transmission cooler

Because the engine temps are normally cooler than the tranny temps. So the stock coolers use the radiator. Been that way for many years on many vehicles.

Re: stock transmission cooler

so that line is going back and forth in the radiator before coming out and going through the second air cooled radiator in front of the main rad? Or is that the coils for the AC compressor.
im going over there today ill look at it again.

Re: stock transmission cooler

It sounds like someone has added an external cooler in series to the existing, factory liquid to liquid cooler tube in radiator tank. This helps drop the temp. a lot better than just the radiator mounted tube and takes some heat load off the engine cooling system under extreme conditions. By running the cooler in series it also warms the trans. fluild a little faster during cold weather. "Morning sickness" is common on worn transmission with cold fluid.

The factory trans cooler is just a tube inside one radiator tank. The fluid "in" in the lower fitting and "out" is the upper. If you truck has a trans cooler added it will be fairly small and forward of the A/C condensor which is mounted in front of the radiator.

As always a picture would help. But just tracing the trans cooler lines will show if an external cooler is plumbed in or not.

Re: stock transmission cooler

ah, this thing had a 5th wheel hitch in it at some point so I bet it was added when they were hauling stuff.

Re: stock transmission cooler

There is a flow convention to if you want to check yours against it.

On a TH400 & TH350 the fliud flow is out the lower trans. fitting, in the lower radiator fitting, out the upper radiator fitting, in the upper trans. fitting.

When you add a cooler in series it is basically the same.
Out the trans lower fitting, in the aux cooler lower fitting, out the aux cooler upper fitting, in the radiator cooler lower fitting, out the radiator cooler upper fitting, in the trans upper fitting.

In any installation the idea is to push the fluid up and back to the trans. to purge all air.

Re: stock transmission cooler

I'll bet they added it hen they did the 5th wheel hitch or when they rebuilt the tranny after they added it.

Re: stock transmission cooler

A liquid to liquid cooler is much more efficient than an air to liquid cooler.

Re: stock transmission cooler

It is... but the external cooler (in line) is set up with the radiator cooler to help drop the temps even more than the stock cooler. Which really comes in handy when pullin' or haulin' heavy loads.
