driveshaft removal

Had questions regarding removing my driveshaft when pulling the engine/transmission:
Everything is unhooked except the motor mounts

What are the steps for removing the driveshaft so I can attach the cherry picker to the plate on the manifold and lift the motor and transmission out together?

First time doing this so I figure id ask for the instructions.thanks!!!

Re: driveshaft removal

Unbolt the rear u joint from the rearend. It will be held down with four bolts.

You're gonna want to stick a plug or spare yoke in the back of the trans when you yank it or you're gonna go all Exxon Valdez underneath the truck.

Re: driveshaft removal

Stick a small prybar or screwdriver in between the yolk and u-joint and GENTLY pry them apart.

Re: driveshaft removal

Not sure why, thought I needed to disconnect the driveshaft to get the yoke out of the tranny

Hmmm, the back of the driveshaft that goes to the rear axle is down,
However there isnt enough slack to push the front part of the driveshaft back in order for the front yoke to slide out of the rear of the transmission. I must be doin something wrong.
I am not getting any play in the middle where that drive shaft loop is welded into place.

Re: driveshaft removal

use engine crane lift engine and tranny and slide them foward as a unit yoke slips right out

a good reason why driveshaft aint goin nowhere is somebody didnt tell you to unbolt the carrier bearing

Re: driveshaft removal

Thanks cdowns.

Ive gotta drill out the plate I bought that bolts to the stock manifold.holes dont line up .do the bolts in the stock intake that had a 2 barrel just unthread or are they studs? Theyre so dirty I cant tell. I have some new grade 8 bolts to use with the engine hoist plate just to be safe.

Re: driveshaft removal

Sounds like you might have a 2 piece drive shaft... to get the shaft out you will have to unbolt the center carrier.
But like some said, with a slip yoke tail shaft you will not have to remove the shaft at all, just unbolt the trans from the cross-member and start pulling

Re: driveshaft removal

That will be all good now. Are you going to put an engine/transmission back in this truck?

It will not be so easy navigating the yoke into the back of the trans while setting the engine/trans back in the hole. Even with help it is not fun. Do yourself a favor and pull the drive shaft now and drain the fluid instead of making a mess all over the floor to lay in.

A little extra time now, saves a big hassle later. That is my input on the situation.

Re: driveshaft removal

Yeah its a 2 piece drive shaft, which ive never removed before so I was kinda lost. This is the original 307/manual 3 speed transmission on the column
I found this all original 48, 000 mile truck , belonged to an old neighbor.

It had been sitting for 10+ years. He only used it for work, then switched to a van to carry more tools. Its pretty filthy under the hood

.gonna degrease it all, repaint the frame, firewall, core support, all new hoses , belts, accessories etc

Re: driveshaft removal

2 bolts should remove the carrier bearing.

Before you put the shaft back in have a professional at a driveline shop check it out. Way too many little things can go unnoticed by someone who doesn't work on driveshafts all day.
