97 gmc steering column issue

Seems like its something new every week. So Im having trouble with the shifter. I apply the brake to shift from park and I pull the shifter, nothing. Its locked and not moving. I fiddle with it trying to get it to move and usually it goes on the second try but today no luck. It almost had my stranded twice so far. I kept reapplying the brake and finally it would shift like butter. I noticed if I push really hard on the brake pedal it free`s up easier. Is there a adjustment or a actuator to replace to solve this? Is this a steering column issue or something else?

Check out this read post number 9 (last on page). Also as mentioned in this do your brake lights work correctly? It could be the brake light switch which also controls this.

Yes brake lights work fine. Thanks for the link. Ill have to look into mine and see if its just a bad switch or maybe just needs a adjustment. At least I learned how to get it moving again so Im not stuck.

Re: 97 gmc steering column issue

Well its been acting up quite a bit lately and havent been able to get it looked at. Now the damn thing wont go back into park and wont start in neutral and my key is stuck in the ignition. Any thoughts? googled it and seems it may be the brake transmission interlock solenoid.

Re: 97 gmc steering column issue

Figured it out. BTIS solenoid sits on a little stud on the column. mine was not on the stud and actually looks like its broken off around the stud so its going to fall off again. Looks like GM is the only one who sells one so I`ll try to get over there tomorrow.
