help removing 305
Im going to pull my 305 from my 84..... Never pulled an engine before. I have the hood off, headers off. Rad out motor supports loose all the line and hoses are off anything I need to remove that isnt visible and also how do I undo the tranny?

If it's auto,remove the dust cover off bottom of bell housing & remove the torque converter bolts,should be 3 then remove all the bolts around the bell housing.Before removing all bell bolts,support the tranny with a jack & attach engine hoist.If it's a standard,remove bell housing bolts& support tranny.I probably missed something,but that should get you going..

You can also remove the trans and motor together. You would just pull the driveshaft, trans crossmember (5 bolts) trans dipstick tube(1 bolt) shift linkage (1 bolt) trans cooler lines and kick down cable at carb. If you are using a lifting plate bolted onto the intake you lift ftom the rear hole. If using a chain position it toward the rear of motor. Then you just lift motor and trans out together install the same way.
Either way you do it you will need to have the truck up on jackstands. Just high enough that the cherry picker ( hoist) legs will roll under the truck lower control arms. It also helps to remove the front tires. Don't raise the truck so high that you can't lift the motor over the core support. You will need the hoist arm extended as far as possible. If you have a crane lifting device then this won't apply. Hope this helps Posted via Mobile Device

You're going to puke a ton of tranny fluid out tailshaft unless you figure out a way to cap it. I've seen folks take junk yokes and slip 'em in and tie 'em in place. I always use a long plastic pan and let it drain into it when I first tip it up. That generally catches most of it.
With big tires, I don't jack up the front, I jack the rear. That helps with the angle that it all likes to come out in, you aren't so straight up and down when it's time to lift and it clears a lot better. Make sure your tether chain is as short as possible, you need all the lift you can get. |

Yes you do need to plug the tailshaft. I use an old driveshaft yoke that i keep just for that.
You can buy a plug at any autoparts store made just for that. You will find out if the hoist won't fit under your lower control arms and need to jack it up higher. However you jack it up make sure you use good jack stands on solid ground bla bla. You know, just be safe and take your time. It's not hard. I have done several motor/trans R&R this year on my trucks. All solo (i don't work well with others) no problem. I don't recommend you do it alone just that it's not hard. As stated above, get the hoist arm as close to the motor as possible cuz you will need all the lift you can get Posted via Mobile Device

Something I didn't mention in the first post too,been doing this way for a few years now& it works for me.Pull the entire front clip first,then pull tranny with engine.It's way easier to work on stuff without climbing over fenders,also most of my trucks are lifted 4x4s so that's why I do it this way too.

I'd leave the tranny if you not replacing it, you have to to tilt/lift it less too
but make sure wheels are blocked some times letting air out of the front tires can give it just a bit extra space coat hanger,wire,rope to tie ip/off the powersteering pump

I've pulled my motor and trans quite a few times, it takes me about 30 min to get it out. I would just pull it all out much easier that way so if you do want to do anything to the trans it makes it much easier to do anything with it. Just like everyone else has said make sure the drive shaft has a plug or fluid will be everywhere. I would say its a two man job, make sure your motor hoist,( cherry picker whatever you call it) works and get the arms and cherry picker as close as possible, then have someone pump it up and basically just guide it through.

Another advantage of pulling the tranny with the motor is you can take it to your local shop and have them put new seals in it while it is out. Or replace with an overdrive tranny if your current one isn't.
