Answer: Metal tag on spindle

I have to apologize in advance to whoever sent me this photo (I deleted your PM before posting this):



In any event my earlier assumption was correct: the small metal tag is the part number information for the knuckle assembly, as built up at the supplier. The knuckle, including brake components, dust shield and spindle would be assembled into a front crossmember assembly, which would include the control arms and front springs. This level of assembly is what would be received at the final assembly plant and selected based on the part number code on the individual vehicle's build sheet. After being selected in the receiving/picking area (in a remote part of the assembly plant) the brake lines and shocks would be added and conveyed to the main assembly line in sequence for the remainder of the vehicle build.

Those same exact metal tags are used as seals for semi trailers also to prove the doors weren't opened during the trip from shipper to reciever.

thanks for the answer i must have asked 20 differant people and no one had a clue, and j knight is right that is what we use to seal trailers with from the shipper to the receiver to make sure the cargo was not tampered with!
