Re: 72 hood insulation
Welcome to the forum! Just remove the old and scrap off any remaining debris. Then just slide the new padding in, you may have to gently pry the opening a little, I'd use a wooden paint stirrer. If its loose use a little black 3M weather strip adhesive to hold it in place.

Re: 72 hood insulation
I'm glad you asked the question I got two hoods to do. I'm worried that my hood will start to wrinkle down the center from flexing too much. THXS ALEX

Re: 72 hood insulation
What is the purpose of the hood insulation? There doesn't see too much to them? My hood shakes as well.
Thanks

Re: 72 hood insulation
It's not really insulation. It's a pad about 2 1/2 x 28 x 1/4 and is installed between the hood skin and hood bracing, dampening the vibrations of the hood.

Re: 72 hood insulation
I've never seen one of these hoods, even when new, that didn't quiver, shake or wiggle to some extent. Some are better (almost OK) than others, but by today's standards they were horrible. In 1970, 71 or 72 Ford had a commercial comparing how rigid their hoods were compared to GM's truck hoods. A guy stood in front of the truck with the hood up, grabbed it by the front corners and flexed it. He then did the same with the Ford's hood. They also had a similar comparison showing how much better their one piece (outer skin) doors were vs. GM's 2 piece doors.

Re: 72 hood insulation
The replacement pads I bought (can't remember where) were too thin and just vibrated out and got lost.

Re: 72 hood insulation
I used urethane auto glass adhesive. Ran a nice bead on each side of the hood. Fixed the oilcan on the hood. That fix was done in 1985 and still good to day!

Re: 72 hood insulation
I ordered some 3M expanding foam 2 part filler.... It expands to fill the gap...
3M Item #: 051135-08463 Product Description 3M™ Flexible Foam is a soft and flexible two-part urethane material which foams in place (closed-cell foam). It is designed to replace OEM's flexible foams found on door intrusion beams, roof bows, inside body panels, pillars, and in other automotive body cavities. Expands to 10 times its original volumeto fill large cavities with a small amount of material. Can be used for OEM replacement of flexible foams to "pre-accident condition" as much as possible. |

Re: 72 hood insulation
I need to replace mine, I took it out to paint the hood, put it back in, went on a long road trip. The A/C started squeaking once I almost got where I was going, luckily I decided to take a look to see what was up, turns out that the pad strip fell out of place, on to the AC and alt belt and chewed them up and twisted them around. Caught them just in time.

Re: 72 hood insulation
I found the older style windshield tape works best, someone mentioned carpet....It will hold moisture and promote rust. Not a hard fix use a wooden paint paddle for sure and welcome to the forum. There is not always an answer available in just a few minutes.

Re: 72 hood insulation
Has anyone installed one of the ABS Hood Insulation Kits from LMC or Brothers.
My main question is how well does it work and is it worth it. |
