55 -59 Front tire size

I am looking for tire size info for my 57. I want to fill the fenders and have a 78 front clip, stock springs and spindles. I have a set of 235/75/15 with 8' wheels and 4' back spacing. they fit but I know it will settle over time. anyone ever seen that big up front work? Thanks for any info

Re: 55 -59 Front tire size

The wheel placement makes a difference as to how a certain tire size looks in the fender opening. I am using a 225/70-15 on my truck and have the wheel one inch forward of stock. I am considering using a 235/75-15 later on, but it may look a little too far forward in the wheel opening. I am using a 29.7" tall rear tire (265/70-15) and the frame sits on a 2 degree rake angle. It looks like you have a real nice front clip there. Do you know where your centerline wound up? Hope this helps.

Here's what it looks like with no motor and 205/75/15 not sure what to measure to get the center line? My biggest concern is that they will rub on the fenders.

Re: 55 -59 Front tire size

From my experience it's not possible to get an 8" wheel under a clip using the stock control arms. The only way I could get a 7" was by using the 80's Camaro style wheel with positive offset, like they're almost flat. I hated the look so ended up with shorter control arms and it's still close. Goes straight fine.....no turn. The down side of a Camaro clip.

Thanks for the advise, I found a guy with a truck locally that will let me experiment to see what they do on his. will probably go to a 225 or 215 on a 6 or 7.

Not really applicable to your set up but I have run 7.50 x 16 in 2 and 4wd configuration. Then switched to 265/70 x 16's. They have 8" tread width and 29" height. here is a pic.

Guess I should have included the caveat about ride ht. Sitting at or near stock ht. you won't have a problem. If you're a weed burner, you will.

What about with the 70s power steering box kits? What can you run?

I have 235/75/15 Cokers on eight inch Corvette rally wheels with four inch back spacing. I have the Chevy frame mounted box and have about 1/8th to 3/16th inches of clearance with my wheels turned to the right limit. My truck is not lowered but my front springs are tired so it is a couple of inches lower than original. I think I remember reading that my CPP disk brake kit did move the wheels out slightly, which would help this clearance, but yours is probably the same.

Not a weed burner, but is lower than stock.

Hey thanks for all the responses, I am testing it on a truck this weekend.

Re: 55 -59 Front tire size

I have a Mustang II front end, and a 79 Firebird rear.....the truck has 225/70/15s on a 6" standard wheel up front, and 255/70/15 on a 8" standard wheel in the rear.....has a nice rake and the tall sidewalls help the ride, tons!

Re: 55 -59 Front tire size

I did my Camaro sub frame the same as yours, but I have 2” drop spindles and I moved the wheel base by 3/4". I flipped the Camaro rear axle on the factory spring pack. All the tires are the same 235/60/16. My rims are also 8” with a 4” back space.
