Cool model truck on ebay

I thought this was super cool. I have pictures of a real one on my computer that matches this model.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

THat kit has been reissued and can be found at a much lower price. While it was good for its time the lack of real dual wheel wheels kind of kills it for me. The 1/2 ton wheel covers just would not look right on a plastic Longhorn build.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

This is an awesome kit. The camper is a very good replica of the actual Open Roads offered through GM.

This kit has never been re-issued. MPC has been out of business for decades.Model King,a newer company that specializes in issuing versions of vintage kits, came out with a kit in '04 featuring the camper portion and car hauler ramp body (racer's wedge) combined in one kit,but not parts of the truck itself. This kit is basically just the box and a few parts for over $100. Model Mountain sells a lot of nice old kits, but they price them higher than anyone else...for the most part. I have a collection of all these original kits from MPC and AMT,so you can believe I think they are awesome. But,it always bugged me how this Open Road kit sits on a scaled 127" frame, when a real one would be 157". And even worse, they used the 15" C/10 wheels & tires with hub caps

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

Tim, Thanks I stand corrected on the re-release I was sure it was the complete camper. Anyway here is a search with some relevant kits and a guys kit rebuild page too. I'd forgotten how bad that shortened wheelbase looked.

That's how much new ones cost. These are rare collectors items.

Not corrected, educated . I know you like gaining (correct) knowledge as much as I do. That Open Road was the last kit I bought for my collection because I felt they missed the mark...and it cost me dearly! You can imagine what a sealed kit would cost compared to this partial kit. But,when you have an almost complete collection with one left to buy (and no intention to built the goofy damned thing anyway) you have to have it. The artwork doesn't bother me too much on the box,and that's all I'm looking at.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

I really like the "Ramp truck " add on. Might sound silly, but I`ve bought real trucks for about those prices.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

Sealed one on the last Ebay link isn't too bad a price.$179 right now.I passed one up about a year ago,I didn't realize they were worth so much and could have bought one for about $75.

Cool Re: Cool model truck on ebay

They are getting higher and higher as the trucks themselves seem to be doing!
I sure wished my dad could find his orignal 72 dealer promo he has stashed at the house some where. He has it just doesn't know where it is. At 89 years old I can understand it to!

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Cool Re: Cool model truck on ebay

Yes it is and I remember it well sitting on the bar as a teenager at the house. I think the tag said 1972. I know he has it because several years ago we where looking at it and that's when I asked him about it he told me he better keep it. He has several old promo's that he kept over the years.
I already have one but this one is speacial since it was given to my dad for truck sales that year.

The one I have you can see in the picture.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

Oh yeah,I see it. I don't think they did a red in '71 anyway, but the only difference is the year on the tag.

Re: Cool model truck on ebay

Round2 models now owns all those MPC, AMT, and other various molds. I've been patiently waiting for some of these kits to be re-released, if the original molds haven't been destroyed. There was rumor of the AMT 72 fleetside being released, again, for about the 5th or 6th time, but i'd so much rather see those more rare MPC versions. They are very generic, but the bodies and beds were accurate, and combined with the AMT 60 Fleetside custom, or 64-65 chevy from Revell, they can be very accurate kits.
