Factory dash paint?

Is the fawn color paint on the dash a smooth finish or is it a crinkle type finish? Or something else? Someday, I might actually get to this point and the PO painted it black crinkle finish inside, which I don't really like. But if that's the correct finish, then I can save some work stripping it down when I get to that point. My old crappy '66 C20 will eventually be a mostly stock appearing truck, slightly lowered and other updated items. But I really like the stock look.

From what I have learned here: 65 and earlier is gloss fawn, 66 is a darker satin finish. It definitely wasn't black. There are lots of threads with pictures, check the FAQs to start.

I think the question was about the texture- wrinkle finish or smooth.

I have never seen anything but a smooth finish on the dash and doors of these trucks, but I may be incorrect.

I personally don't recommend a glossy finish, especially on the top of the dash, because it can cause a dangerous glare on the windshield.

64-65 was "Fawn Poly", a smooth/satin finish. '66 was Dark Fawn with a "ruffing agent" added in to give it a slight texture. It is a finer/smoother finish than wrinkle paint, I would say that the texture matches the grain of 180 grit sandpaper fairly well.


This is on the "cup holder" indentions inside the glovebox lid from my '66- no fading from being in the sun.

I have experimented with SEM texture coating in a rattle can to try to replicate the fine texture, but couldn't get it quite as smooth as the original dash paint. They sell it in quarts, I will try that next so I can thin it slightly and use my paint gun to spray it. I think by thinning it and playing with the air pressure and spray distance I can get it very close.

Yes, the question was about the texture. Looks like I will have some sanding in really hard places ahead of me at some point in the future. Good suggestion about keeping it non-glossy, that makes a lot of sense. theastronaut, thanks for the pictures, they really are worth a thousand words.

In my 66 GMC the color is reduced when mixed which makes it duller.

my gmc was medium fawn polly, we used the original formula and shot it as a straight enamel.....no clear coat....

on the grille in the front of my gmc we painted it the same color but mixed the paint without the increased reducer, and used a base coat clear coat paint . It shines and has a lot more metalic than the interior does.
